1 - provision = the supply of things people need or want, such as food and money. Ex1: The government is responsible for the provision of healthcare Ex2: The provision of specialist teachers is being increased. 2 - transgress = to go beyond the limit of what is morally or legally acceptable. Ex1: They had transgressed the bounds of decency. Ex2: She felt she had transgressed against her own values. 3 - oppression = cruel and unfair treatment of people, especially by not giving them the same freedom/rights as others. Ex1: They have freed themselves from oppression. Ex2: The oppression of women was common in the 1500s. 4 - extent = the degree, size, or limit of something. Ex1: I was amazed at the extent of his knowledge. Ex2: To some extent, I agree with you. 5 - withhold = to refuse to give something to somebody. Ex1: After crashing the car, he feared his father’s wrath. Ex2: He vented his wrath on his colleagues. Note: this word is mainly used in literary, religious, and dramatic texts. In daily speech, use “anger” or “rage” instead. 4 - severe = very serious, harsh or extreme. Ex1: severe pain/depression/asthma.
