” I know who Odin is, that doesn’t mean I believe in Odin. People being aware of Odin doesn’t mean they worshiped Odin. Also, someone can believe a house is haunted while being Christian in religious identity and practice. Scholars like to project paganism onto any sort of superstition medieval peasants had. We probably saw paganism go from: Practicing pagan -> Syncretism -> Christian who takes pagan folklore seriously -> Folklore becomes Christianized 6. Superstition through a game of telephone becomes “paganism” - Medieval priests didn’t use the same categories that we do. And academics are prone to misinterpreting the words of old sources. We have a game of telephone between: Peasants -> Priests who wrote about them -> Academics who read what the priests wrote They might see a woman saying a prayer to Mary while tying a particular number of knots around a sick child’s wrist. The priest says: “That’s superstition” The woman says: “No, I am praying to the mother of god to protect my son.” An academic concludes: “Pagan magical practices persisted.” 7. Many of these superstitions weren’t pagan - Even today people develop superstitions about the world. Many of the superstitions held by peasants weren’t inherited from paganism or carried religious significance, many of them developed organically during the Middle Ages. I think it’s plausible that for a few generations after conversion there was genuine syncretism including the worship of pagan gods. But this quickly gave way to Christian monotheism with non-religious pagan inspired folklore.

The extent to which there was pagan syncretism in medieval Europe is exaggerated. There was syncretism but the notion that most peasants believed Jesus led a war-band and was the son of Odin until the 16th century is pagan we-wuzzery. The transition from paganism to Christianity occurred in 3 stages: 1. Full Syncretism - Priests would approach Germanic pagans and tell them that Jesus was the son of Odin and led a war band. After being captured by his enemies he was crucified and then came back from the dead to destroy them. Polytheists were able to worship new gods in addition to their old gods, they just couldn’t abandon their old gods so this safely got their foot in the door and established church power in these states. “Jesus is the son of Odin and led a war band.” “I sacrifice a goat to Odin in that spring after church and it gives me magic powers.” 2. Paganism as folklore but not religion - After a few generations the church has gained significant power and begins to push out pagan beliefs. The church enforces a more orthodox interpretation of Christianity. Paganism goes from being practiced as a religion to just folklore that increasing is less pagan. Sacrifices disappear. Pagan gods stopped being worshipped as gods and became ghosts or folklore. “I believe in the trinity, we worship only one god.” “St Cuthbert blessed this spring so if I pray at it god might heal me through the Saint.” “There’s a ghost who stalks the forest with one eye named Odin.“ 3. Rigid Bible study - The Protestant reformation and the ensuring counter reformation led to the average person understanding the Bible much better. Syncretism was discouraged as unbiblical and theology spergery took precedent over folk beliefs. “This spring is just a spring magic isn’t real only god” We know when 1 and 3 occurred in each country. The question is: “When did 1 become 2?” “When did syncretism give way to paganism ceasing to be a religion and turning into just folklore?” I would argue that the 1 gave into 2 within only a few generations: 1. Selection Bias in Sources - Proponents of pagan survival theories and heavy syncretism cite letters written by priest complaining about syncretism among their parishioners. The problem here is that there’s a massive selection bias in these reports. Priests reported on syncretism when it happened but didn’t write it down when it didn’t. There aren’t any letters saying: “None of my partitioners do syncretism, everything is normal.” We only see it mentioned when peasants do syncretism. Not when they don’t do it. Therefore, the writings of these priests only prove that there was syncretism in some isolated areas not that it was wide spread. 2. The lack of positive accounts suggest syncretism was abnormal - I would argue that if syncretism were wide spread then you would see priests writing things like: “It’s incredible, no one in my parish practiced syncretism.” Because it would be unusual. The fact we don’t have letters like this suggests syncretism wasn’t wide spread. This is greater than an absence of evidence of syncretism it’s evidence against syncretism. 3. No sources in urban areas - All of the sources bemoaning syncretism are from remote isolated areas. This is consistent with syncretism being a rare phenomena in isolated rural areas. If syncretism were extremely wide spread you would expect to also see it in dense population centers. In fact you would expect to see the amount of accounts of syncretism occur in weight to the population of an area. Instead you only see it in sparsely populated rural areas with less church influence and never in major cities. 4. Similarity does not establish genealogical continuity - The Christian Rogation was once thought to be a Christianized version of the Roman pagan Ambarvalia. We now know that’s not the case. The two share some similarities but have completely separate origins. 5. Knowledge of Mythology does not mean belief in mythology - A lot of the evidence of syncretism is “People knew who Odin was.
