Andrographolide (Andrographis paniculata) This is probably the most direct parallel—it's a natural diterpene lactone that inhibits viral RNA polymerase activity, similar to how ribavirin disrupts RNA synthesis. It has broad antiviral activity against multiple RNA viruses and has been studied extensively in Asian traditional medicine systems. Resveratrol (Red grapes, Japanese knotweed) While not a nucleoside analog like ribavirin, resveratrol inhibits viral replication through multiple pathways including suppression of viral protein synthesis and polymerase activity. It's more of a "functional equivalent" than a structural one. Glycyrrhizin (Licorice root) Works through multiple mechanisms including direct viral polymerase inhibition and interferon induction. Traditional use in herbal medicine for viral infections suggests empirical recognition of this property.
Based on documented mechanisms, a synergistic approach might theoretically include: Lactoferrin + quercetin (blocks entry + inhibits replication) Medicinal mushrooms + vitamin C + curcumin (immune support + endothelial stabilization + anti-inflammation) Licorice + andrographis (viral replication inhibition + immune support)
Anti-inflammatory/Cytokine Modulation Since severe hantavirus disease involves excessive inflammatory response: Curcumin (turmeric) – Inhibits NF-κB and pro-inflammatory cytokine production Boswellia – Reduces inflammatory cascade Omega-3 fatty acids – Shift immune response toward anti-inflammatory profiles Apigenin/Luteolin – Flavonoids with documented immunomodulatory effects
