GREAT BARRIER REEF DEBATE CHALLENGES CLIMATE ALARMISM Recent AIMS data show hard coral cover across much of the Great Barrier Reef remains stable or rising. Northern cover rose from 30% to 35.1%, while central cover increased from 28.6% to 31.6%, both above long-term averages. Southern cover was stable at 26.4%, slightly below its long-term average, despite warmer-than-average seas. Summer temperatures were 0.7–1.1°C above average, yet surveys recorded low bleaching across the Reef. Natural bleaching has occurred repeatedly, including in 1998, 2002, 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022, 2024 and 2025. The article argues that linking bleaching directly to human CO₂ emissions and predicting ecosystem collapse overstates the evidence. It criticises climate alarmism, citing George Monbiot’s 1999 prediction of total reef destruction and contrasting it with current data. Overall, the evidence presented suggests the Reef remains resilient, challenging claims of imminent collapse and supporting natural recovery. NEW STATESMAN’S EXTREME NORTH SEA ENERGY CLAIMS Is Supporting North Sea Oil and Gas an “Extremist” Position? The New Statesman Thinks So https://dailysceptic.org/2026/08/12/is-supporting-north-sea-oil-and-gas-an-extremist-position-the-new-statesman-thinks-so/ By Ben Pile * New Statesman editor Oli Dugmore calls backing new North Sea oil and gas licences “extremist”. * The article argues his case relies heavily on climate-alarmist claims and simplified interpretations of scientific evidence. * It challenges assertions linking 1.5°C directly to ecosystem collapse, coral bleaching, droughts, wildfires and food crises. * It says Dugmore invokes the IEA and IPCC while allegedly extending their conclusions beyond what they actually state. * The author portrays this approach as political rhetoric that discourages legitimate debate over climate and energy policy. * It recalls earlier New Statesman arguments favouring restricted climate debate and excluding sceptical perspectives. * The piece suggests Labour’s possible Net Zero rethink may explain Dugmore’s forceful intervention against energy-policy opponents. * It concludes that the New Statesman’s declining influence and finances reflect a wider crisis of intellectual relevance. MET OFFICE RECORDS RAISE SCIENTIFIC DOUBTS The Met Office confirmed Lingwood’s June record despite serious site problems. Its inspection found hedges, trees, long grass, flowers and a mouldy screen. Such conditions breach WMO standards for reliable temperature measurements. Despite this, the Met Office raised 37.7°C to 38°C using a brief peak reading. Nearby Neatishead reached only 36.6°C, undermining claims of regional consistency. Most 35°C-plus readings this year came from poorly sited Class 4 or 5 stations. Central England data show eight days above 30°C, versus nine by this stage in 1976. The article argues these practices exaggerate heat and prioritise headlines over science. But rather than dropping it, it has upped it to 38°C! This not a serious scientific organisation, says Paul Homewood. By Paul Homewood
