‏﷽ 🌅 A Solar Eclipse is expected to be sighted over the United Kingdom today (Wednesday 12th August 2026) at around 6:06pm GMT and is expected to end around 8:09pm GMT. 💡Here are a few things you must know concerning the solar eclipse prayer also referred to as صلاة الكسوف | Ṣalāt al-Kusūf (the solar eclipse prayer): 1️⃣ Ṣalāt al-Kusūf is a سنَّة | Sunnah and its ruling is therefore مستحب | Mustaḥab (recommended). This means, if the time for a فريضة | Farīḍah (obligatory prayer) has entered, the Muslims begin with the فريضة | Farīḍah (obligatory prayer) and then perform and establish the eclipse prayer. 2️⃣ The eclipse of the sun and moon are an آية | Āyah (sign) from the signs of Allāh -subḥānahū wa taʾālā- as the Prophet (ṣallāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) said when the eclipse took place during his time (ṣallāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam). He (ṣallāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) said, “The sun & moon are two signs of Allāh -subḥānahū wa taʾālā-. They do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone rather Allāh -subḥānahū wa taʾālā- strikes fear into His slaves through them.” [Recorded by an-Nasāʾī no. 1459] 3️⃣ Ṣalāt al-Kusūf is ONLY to be established when witnessed & sighted with the naked eye. i.e. if an astronomer or an office of astrology announce that an eclipse will definitely be sighted, we DO NOT perform Ṣalāt Al-Kusūf. That’s because the أحكام الشرعيَّة | Aḥkām ash-Sharʾiyyah (Islamic rulings) are established with the naked eye 4️⃣ Ṣalāt al-Kusūf is performed as two units of prayer. Each unit of prayer has Rukūʾān (two Rukūʾs -bowings-). e.g. Once the Imām or the individual goes into Rukūʾ, then gets up from the Rukūʾ, instead of going into Sujūd (prostration) they recite Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and commence their recitation. They then go into Rukūʾ for the second time and then get up from Rukūʾ and proceed to the Sujūd. The Second Rakʾah is performed just as the first Rakʾah and then they sit for the Tashahhud. 5️⃣ Ṣalāt al-Kusūf BEGINS when the eclipse is first sighted and it ends when the moon reverts back to its original state as it first were. 6️⃣ Ṣalāt al-Kusūf IS NOT to be made up for.
