Notes: The divine “light” that animates the universe—the creative energy that brings it into being every moment from a state of non-existence—manifests in two ways. In the language of Kabbalah, one is called “Or Makif,” the transcendent (literally, “encompassing”) light, and the other is called “Or Pnimi,” the immanent (literally, “inner”) light. Borrowing a formulation from the book *Zohar*, Hasidic teaching also uses a parallel pair of terms. Thus, “Or Makif” is also known as “Sovev kol almin” (“that which encompasses all worlds”), and “Or Pnimi” is also called “Memale kol almin” (“that which fills—i.e., permeates—all worlds”). These two types of Divine influence reflect the two ways in which our material world serves as a dwelling place for God. Thanks to the immanent light, every existing being can be perceived as a manifestation of the Divine. In contrast, the transcendent light extends beyond the boundaries of all finite existence. Nevertheless, it too can manifest in our world and thus bring the world into contact with God’s infinity. For example, as the sages of Kabbalah teach, the stream of Divine light that the commandment of tzitzit pours upon a person is a light so transcendent and otherworldly that it cannot be clothed in our souls. But when we wrap ourselves in a tallit, we show that we are completely enveloped on all sides by this descending stream of Divine light.

The large tallit is put on as follows: When folded, the tallit is placed on the right shoulder [with the four tzitzit tassels in front], and the tzitzit threads are checked; while checking them, the following verse is recited [Psalms 104:2]: “Bless the Lord, O my soul…”; after that, the tallit is removed from the shoulder, unfolded, its edge is kissed, it is brought behind the back, and the blessing “…to wrap oneself in tzitzit” is recited. The conclusion of the blessing must coincide with the act of tucking the two right corners behind the back, on the left side of the neck (see “Sha’arit Yehuda”—section “Orach Chaim,” chapter 1; “Divrei Nehemiah”—section “Orach Chaim,” chapter 9).
