Now, I properly time my hours and manage myself as my own boss. It has been a curious transition, but I trust that I've been handling it well. Commissions are helping me pay rent, but I'm looking and planning ways to have some passive income too, to ideally allow me more time to work on personal projects, because at the end of the day, it's still my hobby which I love to do. And, you guessed it, I'm opening a Patreon as a way to help out and let people who might be interested have a way to support me on a month-to-month basis. It's also a nice way for me to say, this is what I do now. (And it helps feed my fat fuck dog boyfriend, of course). I know this is a pretty different post from what is usually seen in this channel, I aim to not do these often, but I needed to get this off my chest. If you read all this, wow! Thank you for taking the time to understand and know me better, and I'm looking forward to seeing you enjoy my art.
Hi! Announcement incoming! tldr: I'm now dedicating myself to 3d so I opened up a Patreon, check the next post! I don't often do these emotional dump posts. So, as some of you know and most don't, I have an engineering degree, and I used to work as a developer some years back, jumping between companies, eventually landing on my last job as a game developer. Initially, I thought it was all I'd ever dreamed of, but that was quickly shut down, and reality slapped me in the face. Corpo was soulless, and I worked to keep a dying game running so we could rob old widowed ladies of their money by teasing them with dopamine injections in the form of completing another level of a mediocre bubble shooter mobile game. At some point I accepted this, and kept at it till I was laid off when shit started going down after the pandemic. I found myself in a very different job market than the one I had entered way back, many years ago. I desperately sent resumes, trained in several programming courses, anything to make myself look more appealing to corporate HR, but my profile was not appealing or convenient. This continued for years, as my boyfriend and I lived off savings in a new place, finally living on our own. It was pretty funny because we both lost our game dev jobs after moving out of my father's place. Eventually, I got a job as a customs dispatch officer, just to make ends meet while we kept searching. I came to realize eventually how miserable I felt working there. All along this ride, I kept my hobbies of writing and 3D art; at one point, my friends started suggesting I should start doing commissions to help my economic situation, if only slightly. After a couple of bumps in the road, I did, starting out with small stuff and slowly expanding my style and capacities, eventually reaching animations and VRchat models. What's important about this, for me, is that I felt way more accomplished seeing a happy client use an avatar and feel connected to their character than I'd been in years of corporate development, just being a cog and programming to solve problems we ourselves created. This made me think for years, and consider changing over, many many times, but I kept myself unsteered in great part due to fear, the feeling that it was not the optimal way of doing things, not the thing my parents told me to do, not the thing I'd studied for years. But I ended up cracking, at one specific moment, on a trip to Africa, where I'd fallen gravely sick hours away from a hospital, fever was making me slip in and out of consciousness. My fevered memories are hazy, but I remember crying out to a person I love and appreciate as a brother, very afraid of dying, and realizing I was incredibly dissatisfied and disappointed with the life I was currently living. Finally back at home, I steeled myself for telling my current boss (my uncle) I wanted to drop my work hours down to part-time and start transitioning into an artistic career. The morning before I got back to work, he called me and fired me because I wasn't really needed at the office and he'd rather save money. (Yay capitalism) But at least I'd made my decision, and even then, it was hard for me to really internalize and accept, I still had doubts and self-esteem issues leftover from 3 years without a job, thinking that if I could not get a job with an engineering degree, I probably could not do shit in art, where I had no formal studies. Luckily, I had many supportive friends to help me back up, be it telling me to be stubborn, pep-talking me, buying my art, sharing it around, and many other ways. Whenever I needed help to appreciate myself and what I do, I could look to them to teach me how.
