As a young man, he heard that all the old school blue collar (skilled or semiskilled manual trades) were done & “You won’t make a living in them”. I think many of us now would pick a semi skilled manual trade if we had our time again. My favourite tradesman was my wood guy, remanufacturing windows and doors. Through an 8 year relationship, he made and replaced almost every window and all but one door in our old family home, in which we had lived for 20 years. Turns out he had lots of repeated customers like me. Dave has always been awake to the corruption of almost everything. He was orphaned and raised in a boys home, so I guess you learn early that things are not as advertised and that the powerless can’t do anything much about it. He chose his profession carefully, talking to teachers and tradesmen about what they thought the ideal profession would be for the next generation. He was an apprentice in a local family firm, of necessity. The corruption was the same. People ripping others off, public money diverted (“There’s a drink in it for you, Dave” - wink). By his early thirties he was well-established and respected. He surveyed widely and chose a place to build his own workshop. He was careful enough to talk to his soon to be ex-employer, telling them he had no wish to bump heads & that he planned to specialise in areas they generally didn’t do much of, because it’s fiddly. He’s a wise person. Not educated in a traditional sense, but he knows how the world operates, not as we’d like to believe. Towards the end of our business relationship, I told him once over a mug of tea that I admired him tremendously and why. He seemed moved almost to tears. Honesty, competence and trustworthiness. Plus he had a gentle heart. When we emigrated to America, I didn’t know for sure if we’d even return, so downright weird things had become. I put my two most personally significant motorcycles in long term storage with an acquaintance who lived nearby. He had a huge, detached, riverside property with land & he’d built a quadruple garage at the back. Raised on a low concrete platform and with everything you could wish for in a workshop for servicing up to restorations. No problem adding my two waifs and strays. He would send me a picture every few months, so I’d know they were safe. I kept my mechanics tools and all my spare parts, but almost everything else was given away or sold. To Dave I offered my almost new, top of the line multitool, by it’s inventors “Fein”. Their carry cases are unmistakably orange. One day I saw Dave making a deep, horizontal cut in a frame, millimetres off the ground. I had never seen this tool and asked him if he’d show it to me. His was by an anonymous Korean manufacturer but he said that the best were by Fein, and he couldn’t justify the price premium. Obviously, I’d bought a Fein, not to show off, but because I’ve always loved tools and generally buy the best ones, as I’m fortunately able to do. In 2021, I offered it to Dave nominally at around half list price, which was probably closer to a third, as the accessories I gave him with it are expensive. Though we returned a little over a year later, considerably chastened by our realisation that you cannot trust a word that a state governor or a state surgeon general, I never once regretted going, or giving away or selling much of my stuff. My life now is an entirely different shape than it was a little over a decade ago. I’ve got everything I need, if not still a little overburdened with possessions. I’m sure Dave got ten times more use out of that tool in a year than I ever would have in a lifetime. I learned recently that he’s retired to Southeast Asia somewhere and won’t be back. Among his many sayings was “You know, Mike, it’s all about being bagged and tagged. That’s why I don’t own a smartphone and my van is a well kept ten years old”. He remarks that it’s dawning on a large number of people that your most precious asset is your ability to fix things that people care about. Finally, for now, a recent video on Uncle Tony’s Garage was about his teenage suspicions that cars were becoming unnecessarily complicated from as early as the 1970s. His mantra is that “The right number of computers in your vehicle is zero”. If there’s something you used to be good at but have let lapse, perhaps there’s mileage in revisiting some older skills you no longer use. Most people who are in physically good general condition could almost certainly add one or more practical capabilities, things which might in be in demand in the future. Just a thought. Unsurprisingly, we are told that the first hearing, in 1977, was systematically sabotaged. To this day, we do not have a full understanding of what was done to innocent people in the names of “national security” and “pushing back the frontiers of science”. What a bunch of crooks. What a complete pile of lies. She lists among the accomplishments that wouldn’t have taken place without NIH funding, our current understanding of treatments of heart disease, cholesterol and Alzheimer’s disease. Also, the great mass of vaccines & finally, their work getting ahead of numerous disease “outbreaks”, including those with “pandemic potential”. I did realise that it has no intrinsic worth and relies wholly on confidence. I’m not an absolutist about it, either. While confidence remains, it can be used as an alternative to fiat currencies. Best wishes Mike Ps: If you’re after things which are highly likely to maintain value in the event that fiat money dies (or further, murdered), you might consider low denomination gold and silver coins. In UK, coins called Britannias and Sovereigns are legal tender (though only at their face value, as indicated on the stamped coins). You might also consider things like black peppercorns and suchlike, things which were highly treasured and sought after in the pre-industrial era. Are you really going to do in-depth research into a succession of important topics and put together a slick video every week? This is full time work and requires a great deal of knowledge of the very architecture of how systems like this are even built, without which you have no starting point for your investigation. So, perhaps rather late in the day, I think he’s as described in my post. Doesn’t mean he’s not a useful source of information, but please don’t misinterpret watching it as any kind of action.
