Brain Jotter brought tears of joy to the heart of Mike Ejeagha before he passed into glory. The whole world participated in the GwoGwoGwoNgwo dancestep challenge. I grew up listening to his music on Imo Broadcasting Corporation in the mid-80s and 90s on radio. By doing the viral challenge, his music stepped out of the shadows and received millions of streaming before the legend exited this world. Highlife wasn’t just music. It was the soundtrack of a generation finding its voice after independence. Yet how many of our legends left this world unsung, unpaid, and unremembered? Oliver De Coque. The Oriental Brothers. Victor Olaiya. Mr. Lawrence Obusi. Names that shaped Nigerian identity through guitar riffs and horn sections, but names too many young Nigerians can’t place today. Some of these icons died in near obscurity, their royalties unpaid, their contributions uncelebrated while they still walked among us. BEFORE WE CLAP FOR THE DEAD, LET’S PAY THE LIVING 🎷🥁 This is the uncomfortable truth about art in Nigeria: we love the output but undervalue the artist. We stream the music but rarely ask who’s collecting royalties. We attend the concerts but forget the men who built the genre from nothing, often without formal contracts, structured royalties, or pension plans. Talent alone has never been enough to guarantee dignity in old age. The appreciation must come with structure, funding, and timing. This is why events like the HIGHLIFE LEGENDARY CONCERT & AWARD matter so much.
