Shakespeare died in Stratford-upon-Avon on 23 April 1616 at the age of 52. He is buried in the sanctuary of the parish church, Holy Trinity. Altogether Shakespeare's works include 38 plays, 2 narrative poems, 154 sonnets, and a variety of other poems. No original manuscripts of Shakespeare's plays are known to exist today. It is actually thanks to a group of actors from Shakespeare's company that we have about half of the plays at all. They collected them for publication after Shakespeare died, preserving the plays. His plays, written in the late 16th and early 17th centuries for a small repertory theatre, are now performed and read more often and in more countries than ever before. The prophecy of his great contemporary, the poet and dramatist Ben Jonson, that Shakespeare “was not of an age, but for all time,” has been fulfilled.

William Shakespeare is a renowned English poet, playwright, and actor was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. His birthday is most commonly celebrated on 23 April, which is also believed to be the date of his death in 1616. The parish register of Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon, shows that he was baptized there on April 26, 1564. His father, John Shakespeare, engaged in various kinds of trade, was a burgess of the borough (['bʌrə] – небольшой городок) who in 1565 was chosen an alderman and in 1568 bailiff (the position corresponding to mayor) His wife, Mary Arden, of Wilmcote, Warwickshire, came from an ancient family and was the heiress to some land. (Given the somewhat rigid social distinctions of the 16th century, this marriage must have been a step up the social scale for John Shakespeare.) In 1596 William Shakespeare’s father, John Shakespeare, was granted a coat-of-arms (герб) During this time of increasing social mobility, a coat of arms was an essential symbol of respectability. Between 1570 and 1630, there were 45 'gentlemen' in Stratford-upon-Avon out of a population of around 2,200 (in 1595). 28 had been born into the title; the other 17 were tradesmen who, like Shakespeare, successfully applied for the status. Like all of them, the Shakespeare family were entitled to display their coat of arms above the entrance to their homes, to have it set into windows, and carved (вырезать по дереву) into their furniture. So, the elevated status of Shakespeare’s father meant that he was able to send his children, including William, to the local grammar school. The education there was free, the schoolmaster’s salary being paid by the borough. The boy’s education would consist mostly of Latin studies—learning to read, write, and speak the language fairly well and studying some of the Classical historians, moralists, and poets. Shakespeare did not go to the university after, though. Instead, at age 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who was 8 years his senior - twenty-six. It was a rushed marriage because Anne was already pregnant at the time of the ceremony. Together they had three children. Their first daughter, Susanna, was born six months after the wedding and was later followed by twins Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet died when he was just 11 years old, leaving Shakespeare without male heirs [eə] (наследник) There is some evidence that Shakespeare's twins were baptised in 1585, and that by 1592 his reputation was established in London, but the intervening years are considered a mystery. Scholars generally refer to these years as ‘The Lost Years’. How his career in the theatre began is unclear, but from roughly 1594 onward he was an important member of the Lord Chamberlain’s company of players (called the King’s Men after the accession of James I in 1603). They had the best actor, Richard Burbage; they had the best theatre, the Globe (finished by the autumn of 1599); they had the best dramatist, Shakespeare. It is no wonder that the company prospered. Shakespeare became a full-time professional man of his own theatre, sharing in a cooperative enterprise and intimately concerned with the financial success of the plays he wrote. These were the Elizabethan and Jacobean ages of British theatre (sometimes called the English Renaissance or the Early Modern Period). Shakespeare’s success in the London theatres made him considerably wealthy, and by 1597 he was able to purchase New Place, the largest house in the borough of Stratford-upon-Avon. Although his professional career was spent in London, he maintained close links with his native town. Further property investments in Stratford followed, including the purchase of 107 acres of land in 1602.

Разоблачение фонетической аномалии! Часто на уроках возникают проблемы с произношением следующих английских слов: Company Comfort None Написана буква о, а почему произносим /ʌ/? Проблема… Буква o читается как /ʌ/ в ударном слоге перед буквами m, n, v, th, l. В Средние века писцы использовали готическое письмо, или blackletter. Буквы u, n, m, v состояли из одинаковых коротких вертикальных штрихов, которые назывались минимами. Когда слово состояло из сочетания этих букв, оно выглядело как набор одинаковых штрихов и прочитать его было сложно, поэтому для улучшения читабельности писцы стали заменять букву u на o, если она стояла рядом с вышеупомянутыми согласными. Буква о в рукописях писалась более округло, чем u, поэтому слово становилось читабельным. Написание поменялось, но люди продолжали произносить этот звук как короткий /u/, который позже в английском превратился в /ʌ / strut vowel. Когда появилось печатное дело, то книгопечатники зафиксировали это как норму. Но английский язык удивительный, есть и исключения, поэтому это ориентир для ученика, все проверяем по словарю!
