Hey everyone! What do you think about creating a space for scientific debates on topics related to climate change, environmental issues, renewable energy, and other scientific subjects? 🔹 In these debates, people with different scientific viewpoints can engage in discussions, tackle controversies, and share new research and insights. Here are a few conditions to make it work: ▪️Scientific and evidence-based arguments are a must. ▪️The discussions should remain respectful and constructive, avoiding any personal attacks or bias. ▪️No room for myths or misinformation—we want facts! ▪️Participants should be ready to back up their opinions with credible sources. 🔹 Would you be interested in such debates? 🔹 What topics would you like to see discussed? Drop your thoughts in the comments! Looking forward to hearing from you! 💬 Interested? Reach Out! @Enviro_Climate
A great article to read Ecological Risks Arising from the Impact of Large-scale Afforestation on the Regional Water Supply Balance in Southwest China Xiao et al, 2020 Ecological degradation impedes sustainable development in Southwest China, and artificial afforestation has been a key strategy of the Government of China to effectively curb it. However, the water consumed by large-scale afforestation has a huge impact on water supply in Southwest China, which also arise a new challenge causing severe drought here recently. Image copyright © Tim Robinson An article critiquing the book titled "Climate change and the nation state: the realist case" by Anatol Lieven. This article (click here ) explores "Climate Change and the Nation State", which examines how nation-states and nationalism can play a role in addressing climate change. Lieven argues that nation-states are indispensable tools for tackling global crises and suggests that nationalism, when properly directed, can unite populations behind climate action. The discussion raises a critical question: Can nationalism contribute to combating climate change, or should nation-states serve solely as instruments for global objectives? A key critique is the need to distinguish the practical significance of nation-states from nationalism as an independent goal. @Enviro_Climate
Climate change mitigation has become a global priority, requiring urgent action. Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a key tool in this effort, with applications in climate modeling, renewable energy optimization, sustainable practices, and carbon capture technologies. While AI holds great promise, challenges remain, and it is crucial to develop ethical guidelines, transparency standards, and governance frameworks. Collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and industries is essential for effective AI integration in climate change solutions. Read more»» @Enviro_Climate

What’s the Link between Climate Change and Language? As the environment becomes increasingly more hostile for people living in highly linguistically diverse areas — from sea-level rise along the coast to more severe droughts in desert regions — climate change-induced migration could have serious consequences for some of the most at-risk languages spoken today. When climate activism and nationalism collide Kemal Derviş While climate activists have built an impressive international movement, broadening their political support and crossing borders, the nationalist narrative has been gaining ground in domestic politics around the world. Its central message—that the world consists of nation-states in relentless competition with one another—stands in sharp contrast to the climate movement’s “one planet” emphasis on human solidarity. And these two trends are on a collision course. Read more »» brookings.edu @Enviro_Climate

A young girl collects food from a rubbish dump in Islamabad, Pakistan(PHOTO: AFP) Climate change profoundly affects child labour, ILO research finds: Children have been identified as one of the population groups at greatest risk from the systemic shocks caused by climate change. It finds that increased poverty is probably the most important link between climate change and child labour. The damage caused by climate change is significantly affecting livelihoods and living conditions, pushing more people into poverty and degrading the circumstances of those who are already poor and vulnerable. There is evidence that these conditions induce households to rely more on child labour, the paper says. Other key impact channels identified in the paper include: ▪️changes to agricultural productivity; ▪️climate-related extreme weather shocks; ▪️climate-driven migration and conflict; ▪️health issues, hazardous child labor; ▪️destruction or degradation of basic services infrastructure. PETERPENCIL/GETTY IMAGES Human ancestors may have survived a brush with extinction 900,000 years ago About 1 million years ago, our distant ancestors hunted in small bands and gathered their food with sophisticated stone tools. Then, about 900,000 years ago, something happened: The number of breeding individuals dwindled to only about 1300, according to a new study modeling ancient population sizes. Our ancestors came within a hair’s breadth of extinction, and populations remained that low for the next 100,000 years or more, researchers argue today in Science. Media coverage of climate change research does not inspire action Ⓒwp.unil.ch Media coverage of scientific advances on climate issues does not activate the mechanisms known in psychology to trigger action in individuals and groups. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by social scientists and geoscientists from the University of Lausanne (UNIL – Switzerland). @Enviro_Climate
