While the Germanic ruling classes gradually merged by blood with the Romanic element, they simultaneously adopted the Christian faith, which they, however, largely permeated with ideas of their own kind. Added to this was contact with the partly still-living cultural heritage of antiquity, which substantially contributed to the formation of the new civilization of Europe.
