    Research Update #18 – PHPCoinAddress Wallets (Part 2) Key points: The researcher searched approximately 2^41 and 2^40 candidate states—far beyond a simple 2^32 search. More than: 17,652 Bitcoin wallets 10,007 Bitcoin Cash wallets Hundreds of Litecoin wallets were identified as vulnerable. The vulnerable Bitcoin wallets alone had processed over 7,713 BTC in historical transactions. Timeline analysis shows that most funds were drained during 2015, 2016, and 2018, strongly suggesting exploitation by attackers. Even after the vulnerability became publicly known, multiple projects continued shipping the same insecure code for years.   • 📢 Investigating Weak Brainwallets Published: Jan 6, 2026 Author: Christian Reitter The Milk Sad research project has released Update #16, taking a deep dive into Brainwallets—cryptocurrency wallets where private keys are derived directly from a human-chosen passphrase rather than a cryptographically secure random number generator. 🔑 What Makes Brainwallets So Vulnerable? Humans are notoriously bad at picking high-entropy passphrases. When combined with fast, single-round hashing algorithms (like a single iteration of SHA-256) and no unique salt, the blockchain essentially becomes a massive public hash database. Attackers can execute offline, parallel brute-force attacks against every known brainwallet at once—with zero on-chain costs. 📊 Key Findings & Statistics: Scale: Researchers identified over 20,397 Bitcoin and 19,761 Bitcoin Cash weak addresses stemming from a single round of SHA-256, representing a historical volume of over 3,600+ BTC. Dominant Derivations: The vast majority of discovered weak wallets used SHA256(passphrase) or SHA256(SHA256(passphrase)). Recent $500k Theft (Feb 2025): A high-value weak wallet saw ~$500,000 (5.26 BTC) move through it. It was likely swept automatically by an attacker's bot within seconds of deposit. The victim even attempted to communicate with the sweeper via encoded vanity address messages. 🛠 Open-Source Tooling & Data Release: Since brainwallet brute-forcing tools (such as brainflayer) have been widely available for over a decade, Milk Sad published their parallel Rust-based CPU search tool (rust-brainwallet-search) alongside a curated dataset of identified weak addresses to help researchers study past usage patterns. 💡 Takeaway: Never rely on human-generated passphrases or custom hashing shortcuts for crypto storage. Always use standard, high-entropy seed generation methods like 12 or 24-word BIP-39 mnemonics. 🗣This is new research. I have fixed the code errors and compiled it. Interested individuals can obtain it for a very nominal fee—just $100—and it is available to only 20 people.

    🥇Here is an example of an attack with BKZ and with auxiliary algorithms and a special filter that I designed myself. As you can see, 600 signatures were reduced to 175 signatures with a special filter and in the stages of the attack it is quite clear that the vector reduction was completely successful and in the first stage 9 keys were found and in the next stage the same signatures found 10 keys. It is quite clear that the algorithm works perfectly but it has not yet found the right direction for the private key and it needs time. This code and tool are not for sale and are for educational purposes only. More than a year and a half have been spent on this research and writing the code.
