People reportedly placed live brown frogs in milk to keep it from spoiling before modern refrigeration. The practice was based on the observation that milk stayed fresh longer when a frog was placed in it. Later, scientists discovered that the skin of these frogs secretes antimicrobial peptides, which act as natural antibiotics, inhibiting bacterial growth and helping preserve the milk.

Arturs Baumanis - The Horse of Destiny (Likteņa Zirgs) 1887 A 12th-century scene from the Livonian Chronicle of Henry, capturing a dramatic moment where the Livonians, a Baltic tribe, decide the fate of a Christian monk named Teodorihs. Frustrated by poor harvests they attribute to the monk’s Christian influence—believing their gods are punishing them for his better yields—they subject him to a ritual: a white horse, revered in ancient cultures as a symbol of divine will/fate, must step over a spear. If it steps with its right leg, Teodorihs lives; with its left, he dies. The horse consistently chooses the right leg, sparing the monk, though the Livonians argue the Christian God influenced the outcome. The scene captures a clash of cultures: the Livs’ pagan traditions versus the encroaching Christian influence.
