Here’s how Florensky describes Plato: Early apologists called him a Christian before Christ, believing him to have been touched by the grace of God the Word (Logos) and saw in him a kind of prophet in partibus infidelium (the lands of the unbelievers), and in his writings, a foreshadowing of things to come. Meanwhile, contemporary neoplatonists referred to him as nothing less than most holy and divine or divinely inspired. Indeed, his works were for them a kind of sacred, canonical Scripture. You realize, of course, that we are speaking of Plato…You are aware of the undeniable continuity of our spirituality from Plato. By our very name, we acknowledge ourselves as alumni of the Athenian Academy. Naturally, there is nothing demeaning to Christianity in this acknowledgment. After all, weren’t Christians born of pagan parents? So, too, are we the sons of the ancient Prophet of Attica.

"We don’t christianize Plato, Plato christianizes." Having recently read four volumes of a prominent Orthodox theologian Pavel Florensky I have expectedly found countless praise for Plato and philosophy as a whole. Despite being pure sewage ideologically hiding behind fancy latin words, it’s a useful read for those interested in platonism being the basis for christian worldview. However I enjoyed reading the author’s brief digressions in which he writes about the folk magic and peasant (i.e. Pagan) belief. Of course from his perspective, those are just misinterpretations of the true nature of the world, but Florensky is not as harsh as most priests and seems to have genuine respect for the common man’s faith.

I want to share this again to re-emphasize the theological foundation of this religion. This is the theological foundation of all Western polytheist religion. There is no other. Anyone trying to convince you that they are a guru or a Messiah or an anointed prophet is lying to you. Rejection of the Ancestral Endowment is blasphemy and impiety in our religion. Here is a list of individuals that were convicted of this crime in the ancient world: Mediterranean / Ancient Greece * Socrates (399 BCE) The most famous trial for impiety (graphē asebeias) in ancient history. The formal indictment brought by Meletus accused Socrates of refusing to acknowledge the gods recognized by the state, introducing new divinities (daimonia), and corrupting the youth. His philosophical questioning was seen as a direct threat to the traditional ancestral customs and civil order of Athens. * Anaxagoras (c. 430 BCE) A Pre-Socratic philosopher and close associate of Pericles, Anaxagoras challenged traditional cosmological views by asserting that the sun was not a deity (Helios), but rather a fiery mass of metal larger than the Peloponnese. He was prosecuted for impiety in Athens for rejecting the divine nature of the celestial bodies worshipped by the city. To avoid execution, he fled to Lampsacus. * Diagoras of Melos (5th Century BCE) Known in antiquity as "Diagoras the Atheist," he openly ridiculed the Eleusinian Mysteries—one of the most sacred ancestral religious institutions in Greece—and spoke out against the traditional gods. The Athenian assembly issued a decree declaring him an outlaw, offering a cash bounty for his death or capture, forcing him to flee the city. * Protagoras (c. 411 BCE) The Sophist philosopher opened his treatise On the Gods with agnostic skepticism, stating that he could not know whether the gods existed or what form they took. According to ancient accounts (such as Diogenes Laërtius), the Athenians brought a charge of impiety against him, burned his books in the marketplace, and banished him from the city. * Theoris of Lemnos (4th Century BCE) A priestess executed in Athens alongside her family in the 360s BCE. While the historical details are complex, primary sources (including Demosthenes and Philochorus) note that she was convicted of asebeia for performing unauthorized incantations and introducing unlawful foreign religious rites that bypassed the sanctioned ancestral cults of the polis. * Aristotle (323 BCE) Following the death of Alexander the Great, anti-Macedonian sentiment flared in Athens. Aristotle was charged with impiety, ostensibly for a poem he had written years earlier honoring his late father-in-law Hermias in the style of a traditional sacred hymn (a rite reserved strictly for gods). Recognizing the political nature of the charge, Aristotle famously fled to Chalcis, stating he would not give Athens "a second chance to sin against philosophy." Northern Europe * Raedwald of East Anglia’s Dual Altar (7th Century CE) Recorded by the Venerable Bede in his Historia Ecclesiastica, King Raedwald attempted to merge foreign Christian worship with the ancestral religion of his people. He erected an altar to Christ inside the same sacred sanctuary (fanum) where he maintained an altar for ancestral pagan sacrifices. His compromise was rejected by the traditional nobility, who viewed the introduction of foreign practices into the sacred space as a dangerous desecration of tribal custom. * The Frisian Cult Disturbers (Lex Frisionum, c. 785 CE) Early Germanic law codes heavily prosecuted any violation of sacred spaces. Under Title XXII of the Lex Frisionum (the legal code of the Frisians), anyone who broke into a sacred pagan temple (hof or fanum), damaged sacred objects, or violated the peace of the ancestral deities was declared homo sacer (accursed). They were subjected to ritual execution on the seashore—offered as a corrective sacrifice to the gods whose sanctuary they had defiled. * Radbod, King of the Frisians (d. 719 CE)

Japanese The good, the bad and the ugly I like Japanese, but also hate them. May be too strong of a word, really I just think the whole nation is low key retarded which is both good and bad. An outlaw was stripped of all property, forbidden from receiving food or shelter, and could be killed by anyone without legal repercussion. * The Uppsala Assemblies (11th Century CE) According to Adam of Bremen's historical accounts, the central assembly (Thing) at Gammel Uppsala in Sweden mandated participation in the national nine-year sacrificial festival (blót). Those who refused to participate in the traditional ancestral rites—or who attempted to withhold required tribute to the temple—were fined, banished, or forcibly compelled by the community to fulfill their obligations to preserve the collective standing of the folk. * Hjalti Skeggjason (999 CE) In Njáls saga (ch. 102), Hjalti was convicted of impiety after reciting a verse comparing Freyja to a bitch and Odin to a dog. Likening ancestral deities to dogs (garmr / hundr) was treated as severe ritual defamation (níð) and a breach of the sacred peace (friðr).
