Imagine dying for someone you love - hard decision, but possible. Now imagine dying a torturous death for someone who hates you? The bible says it's better to go to a funeral than to go to a party! Amazing how the world turns everything upsidedown. But this verse is true wisdom. When you're at a funeral or thinking of death --> you are thinking of the afterlife. You are asking yourself the BIG questions of life, the meaning of life & thoughts of God. Maybe you ask where you'll end up...but you're entire focus really is on God & heavenly things. When you go to a party --> drinking, flirting, indulgence, drunkardness, permiscuous behaviour, arguments, lack of self-control etc...all leading to sin. No thoughts of God at all. Bread 🍞 & circuses 🎪 are satans ploy. Don't get distracted by worldly pleasures that led you away from Him. Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. (Gal 5:16) Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. Poor things

For those who love God, this is such a comforting verse. For those who don't know God, not so much. It speaks to the concept of divine omniscience - that God knows every hidden thought, motive, and inner feeling of all of us. He will ultimately judge us from His perfect knowledge of us. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. (1Sam 16:7) A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart. (Pro 21:2) I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds. (Jer 17:10) For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. (Matt 6:8) For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Heb 4:12) No one knows what you most need or can see where your true faith lies except God. Ask Him to show you the way...
