“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. Why We Should Read Scripture for Ourselves Why should we read the Bible for ourselves? Why not simply go to church, listen to the pastor, and trust them to tell us what Scripture says and means? Because our relationship with the Father is personal. Schooling, degrees, titles, or religious positions cannot equip someone for a personal relationship with God. That relationship comes through seeking Him, through His Word and through His Son, Jesus Christ. We must read, learn, pray, and seek to know His truth for ourselves. Acts 17:11 gives us a beautiful example. When Paul and Silas taught the Bereans, they did not blindly accept what they heard even from Paul. "They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." If the Bereans searched the Scriptures to verify what Paul was teaching, shouldn't we do the same? History reminds us that generations of people depended on religious leaders because they could not read Scripture for themselves. Even today, many hear what a pastor says and accept it without ever opening the Bible to see whether it is actually true. Think about cursive writing. For generations, people learned it because it was necessary. Today, many consider it irrelevant. But what happens when we encounter historical letters, documents, or records written in cursive? If we stop learning how to read it, eventually we may lose the ability to understand what was written before us. The same principle applies to Scripture. We should never become so dependent on someone else to read and interpret God's Word for us that we lose the ability or the desire to search it for ourselves. Paul told Timothy, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15. And Jesus said, "Search the scriptures." John 5:39. Some discount Scripture because it was translated by men. But before we dismiss God's Word, shouldn't we actually read it, study it, and test what it says? Throughout history, Scripture has been compared with archaeological discoveries and historical evidence in ways that continue to give people reason to examine it seriously. And beyond history, there are people today who sincerely call upon God and experience His guidance, protection, correction, and the moving of His Spirit in their lives. These experiences should not replace Scripture, but they can encourage us to seek Him rather than dismiss Him without ever searching. My mother always told me, "Memorize your Bible, because there may come a time when you don't have one to read." That stayed with me. We don't know what the future holds. But we do know that God's Word is too important to leave entirely in someone else's hands. Read. Learn. Pray. Repent. Fast. Seek. Don't simply accept what someone tells you God said. Go to His Word and seek Him personally through Christ. Jesus gave us this promise: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." Matthew 7:7–8. If you genuinely seek God, don't be afraid to ask Him to reveal His truth to you. Search the Scriptures. Pray over what you read. Be willing to repent when you discover you were wrong. Fast. Keep seeking. Don't just know what someone says the Bible says. Know what the Bible says for yourself. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:105.
