Baldwin IV (c. 1161 – 16 March 1185), also called Baldwin the Leper, was King of Jerusalem from 1174 until his death in 1185. He was the son of Amalric I of Jerusalem and Agnes of Courtenay. Baldwin IV was diagnosed with leprosy at a young age, which gradually disfigured his body and impaired his mobility. Despite his illness, he was a skilled military leader and a wise ruler. He led the Kingdom of Jerusalem to victory in several battles against the Muslims, including the Battle of Montgisard in 1177. Baldwin IV also played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Ramla in 1182, which established a truce between the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the Ayyubid Sultanate. Baldwin IV's reign was marked by both triumphs and tragedies. He was a brave and compassionate king who was loved by his people. However, his illness eventually took its toll, and he died at the age of 24. Baldwin IV was succeeded by his nephew, Baldwin V, who was only five years old. Baldwin IV is remembered as one of the most remarkable kings in the history of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. He was a courageous leader who faced adversity with grace and determination. His legacy continues to inspire people today.
