A Demonstrator’s Guide to Understanding Police Batons And How to Protect against Them Cops often hit people with batons. Looking at footage, you’d think that the prospect of doing so is what gets them out of bed in the morning. Historically, batons are the bread and butter of policing to such an extent that the baton is often referred to as the officer’s “badge of office”—though lately, Tasers have supplanted batons as their go-to weapon. Instructional videos and pamphlets give the false impression that police are martial arts masters who carefully study all the ways to injure people with big wooden sticks. If you go to demonstrations, though, you generally see the same few moves over and over. They swing wildly at people they already have on the ground. They jab people with the end of the baton, often without provocation. They hit people with wild overhand swings, often in the head—although in theory, they’re not supposed to do that unless they’ve been authorized to employ lethal force. 🚨 EMERGENCY PROTEST THURSDAY 17/04 13:00– SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINIAN PRISONERS AND THE STUDENTS 🚨 The past two days we have seen unprecedented amounts of police violence against the students at the UvA. After students occupied the Maagdenhuis, protestors faced harsh police brutality, using batons and dogs. One protestor had to receive medical care, and many were arrested unjustly. On Tuesday at Roeterseiland campus, a student was snatched and arrested for chalking 1312. While the violence in itself is appalling, what makes it even more difficult to stomach is what these students are being brutalized for: demanding the university cut ties with “Israeli” institutions complicit in the genocide of Palestinians. The intensity of the crackdown reveals the hypocrisy of the UvA, a university with liberal values that maintains research ties enabling the Palestinian genocide, whilst violently suppressing students voices challenging the colonial status quo. We protest today for the students, and in commemoration of Palestinian prisoners day; a national day dedicated to the freedom of prisoners and support for their rights. The date was chosen as it marked the release of prisoner Mahmoud Bakr Hijazi in the first prisoner exchange between the Palestinians and Israel. Palestinians face harsh consequences for protesting against the zionist regimes, with brutal prison conditions. As it stands, the “Israel” Prison Service (IPS) was holding 9,619 Palestinians in detention. By standing in solidarity with Palestinian liberation, we will protest to bring awareness to the brutalities of the zionist regime, and show solidarity for our comrades in Amsterdam who have resisted in the past week. We will continue to protest until the UvA cuts their ties with the zionist regime, for a Free Palestine. 🇵🇸

Today marks the first occupation of the year at the University of Amsterdam. We have reclaimed the building in honour of Dr Sirin Mohammed Al-Attar, a dedicated UNRWA gynaecologist who was tragically martyred in al-Bureij camp on October 11th 2023. Dr Sirin does not stand alone, she is one of the at least 62.614 Palestinians who have been killed by the ‘Israeli’ Zionist regime. When our government fails us, it becomes our duty to resist. After countless fail attempts to go into dialogue with the UvA on their ties to Israeli universities that act complicit to the genocide, we see no other choice but to resist, and therefore occupy this building. All that has come from our previous actions has been the UvA cutting an exchange programme with Hebrew university, and we are enraged by their desire to renew this tie. We are loud in reclaiming our university, and do so in solidarity for Palestinian liberation. We will remain until the UvA boycotts and divests. FREE PALESTINE 🇵🇸
