NEED as a MODAL VERB (semi-modal) Key features Mostly used in negative and question forms Followed by a bare infinitive (verb without to) Common in British English Refers to lack of necessity Form Subject + need + base verb --- a) Negative form need not / needn’t + base verb ✔ You needn’t worry. ✔ She need not come tomorrow. 👉 Meaning: It is not necessary. --- b) Question form Need + subject + base verb? ✔ Need I explain again? ✔ Need we bring our own books? (Formal / British / exam style) --- c) Third person singular ❌ No -s added ✔ He needn’t go. ❌ He needsn’t go. (wrong for modal use) --- d) Past reference (exception) Modal need has no true past form. Instead, we use: need not have + past participle ✔ You needn’t have bought so much food. 👉 Meaning: You bought it, but it was unnecessary. --- 2.
