Dr. Shayan Oveis-Gharan, an Iranian researcher, has been awarded the Abacus Prize for 2026. It was glad tidings amidst the bitter news of these days. Shayan was born in 1985 in Isfahan and is a recipient of the gold medal at the World Computer Olympiad in 2003. He is currently a professor at the University of Washington. This award bears a striking resemblance to the Fields Medal in Mathematics, which was awarded to Maryam Mirzakhani and Caucher Birkar. The prize is conferred every four years upon researchers under the age of forty in the field of computer sciences. The Simon Foundation published this video, which beautifully highlights Shayan's origin. @MJ_diaries

If we can understand discontent without smothering it by the search for certainty and psychological security, if we can keep that discontent and its flame alive, our problem is simple, because that very discontent is creative, and from that we can move on. But the moment we smother discontent, put it away, resist it, hide it, the mind is concerned merely with the reconciliation of effects, and discontent is no longer a means of going forward and plunging into something unknown.
