MINDS OF ASPIRANTS CONCEPT SERIES | AUGUST 9 | THE HINDU 🦠 INDIAN TRIBAL MICROBIOME STUDY WHAT IS THE INDIAN MICROBIOME STUDY? The study examined the gut microbiomes of 76 healthy adults from 8 Indian tribal populations to understand how traditional diets and long-term dietary habits shape gut bacteria. • Researchers analysed dietary data and faecal samples. • It found that Indian tribal communities possess distinct microbial profiles, shaped strongly by their traditional diets. • Indian populations remain under-represented in global microbiome studies. WHAT ARE THE REGIONS AND TRIBES SELECTED? The 8 tribal populations were selected from 4 broad regions: Western Coast – Warli Northeastern Deccan Plateau – Madia & Gond Northeastern India – Kabui Trans-Himalayas – Brokpa, Purig-pa, Balti & Boto TOTAL: 8 TRIBAL POPULATIONS | 76 PARTICIPANTS WHAT BACTERIA WAS FOUND IN THE HIMALAYAN TRIBES & WHAT DOES IT SHOW? The trans-Himalayan population showed a distinctive strain of the bacterium: Bifidobacterium adolescentis This microbial pattern was associated with their high consumption of dairy products. Their traditional diet contained substantial amounts of grains and dairy, unlike some of the other tribal communities studied. KEY FINDING: Dietary practices → Microbial adaptation → Distinctive gut microbiome The study suggests that long-term dietary habits can influence the establishment of specific microbial communities in the human gut. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THIS BACTERIA? Bifidobacterium species are important components of the gut microbiome and are commonly associated with gut health and probiotic functions. They can: • Help metabolise dietary carbohydrates • Produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) • Help in the utilisation and fermentation of lactose and other carbohydrates • Contribute to maintaining a healthy gut microbial environment ANTHROPOLOGY ANGLE: The study indicates that the presence of particular bacteria may reflect long-term adaptation of the human microbiome to traditional diets. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY PRESERVATION OF MICROBIAL DIVERSITY Traditional communities may harbour unique microbial diversity that could disappear with urbanisation and dietary change. BIOBANKING Researchers emphasise creating microbiome biobanks to preserve indigenous microbial communities for future research. REGION-SPECIFIC PROBIOTICS Knowledge of local microbial profiles could help develop region- and population-specific probiotic interventions rather than assuming one probiotic works equally for everyone. EVOLUTIONARY ANTHROPOLOGY The study shows the interaction between: Culture + Diet + Environment + Human Biology INDIAN HUMAN MICROBIOME RESEARCH The study provides baseline data for understanding India’s enormous microbial diversity, which is still underrepresented in global microbiome datasets.
