Kaynes Technology made ₹364 crore in profit last year. And yet, its operating cash flow was negative by ₹600 crore in the same year. Same company, same year but two completely different stories. This is one of the most important and least understood concepts in investing. A company can be genuinely profitable and still be consuming cash faster than it is generating it. Here is what is happening. Kaynes is growing fast. Revenue almost doubled in two years. But to deliver that growth, the company needs to buy more inventory upfront, manufacture the product, deliver it, and then wait for customers to pay. In FY26, receivable days jumped from 84 to 134 days. Receivables jumped from ₹575 crore to ₹1,528 crore. Much of that money is tied up in inventory and customer invoices, but it is not in the bank yet. This is what accountants call working capital. And when working capital grows faster than profits, cash flow turns negative even when the P&L looks healthy. Profit tells you what a business earned. Cash flow tells you what it actually collected. The next time you look at a fast-growing company, check both numbers. A business that earns strong profits on paper but struggles to collect cash is a question worth asking early.

Risk is not just the possibility of losing money. It’s the possibility of not having money when you need it. Sequence risk, liquidity risk, inflation risk, interest rate risk. These are just as meaningful as market risk. Build a financial plan that accounts for all of them, not just the one that gets the most attention.
