🇮🇱🇵🇸 Balfour & Rothschilds: The fuse that lit the Israel-Palestine conflict November 29 is the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, observed since 1977. This year, it comes during a volatile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. Balfour Declaration After defeating the Ottoman Empire in WWI, Britain seized Palestine — a land with an Arab majority, a Jewish minority — via a League of Nations mandate. On November 2, 1917, Britain’s then-Foreign Secretary and Zionist supporter Arthur Balfour penned a letter to Lionel Walter Rothschild, a figurehead of the British Jewish community. In it, the British government promised a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine — while promising to protect the rights of the non-Jewish population. In effect, the political rights of the Palestinians were sidelined. The declaration's deliberately vague language did not specify precise territorial boundaries. British mandate By 1923, the British mandate allowed mass Jewish immigration, while Palestinians faced land loss. The Jewish minority rose to almost 30% of Palestine’s population by 1939, triggering clashes, including a 1936-1939 Arab revolt that was suppressed by force. 1947: UN draws the line The UN voted to partition Palestine into separate Jewish (56% of the territory, though Jews were about 33% of the population) and Arab (43% of the territory) states, with Jerusalem as an international city. No Arab nation backed it; Britain abstained — and set a May 14, 1948, exit. Jewish leaders declared the independent state of Israel. The Nakba ("Catastrophe") The 1948 Arab–Israeli War began immediately after Israel declared independence and lasted until early 1949. After fighting ended: 🔴 Israel controlled 78% of Mandatory Palestine (much more than the 56% allocated by the UN plan) 🔴 No Palestinian Arab state was created 🔴 Approximately 700,000–750,000 Palestinian Arabs became refugees 🔴 Hostility between Israel and its Arab neighbors led to further wars 1967 Six-Day War 🔴 In its strike against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, Israel seized Gaza, the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank. 🔴 The war brought about a second exodus of Palestinians, estimated at half a million. The West Bank, along with East Jerusalem and Gaza, is part of what are known as the Occupied Palestinian Territories. ◾Two Palestinian solidarity activists were abducted tonight by Israeli settlers and occupation forces in Tuwani, southern occupied West Bank. Settlers from the Havat Maon outpost, disguised in Israeli military uniforms, intercepted the activists on a public road, brandishing rifles and forcibly taking their car keys. ◾UN: Israel’s War Has Pushed Gaza Into a “Human-Made Abyss” A new UNCTAD report says Israel’s war on Gaza has collapsed the economy by 87%, leaving GDP per capita at just $161, one of the lowest in the world. Reconstruction is expected to cost over $70 billion and take decades. The report warns that Israel’s destruction has “undermined every pillar of survival” for all 2.3 million residents, driving them into extreme impoverishment. In the occupied West Bank, Israeli violence, settlement expansion, and movement restrictions have also “decimated the economy,” especially as Israel withholds critical tax revenues.
