The Kappa. The Kappa is a famous creature from Japanese folklore, a mischievous and sometimes dangerous water-dwelling yokai. Usually depicted as a small, humanoid creature with greenish skin, a turtle-like shell, webbed hands and feet, a beak-like mouth, and a dish-shaped depression on its head that holds water. Kappa are said to inhabit rivers, ponds, and lakes, where they may challenge humans, pull people underwater, or play tricks on travelers. However, they can also behave honorably and even help people who treat them respectfully. Their greatest weakness is the water in the dish on their head—if it spills, the kappa becomes powerless. They are also famously fond of cucumbers, which are traditionally offered to appease them.
