Five more Ethiopian cities, one growing collection. There’s #Hawassa, where life revolves around the lake, #Jinka down in the landscapes of South #Omo, and #DebreTabor up in the cool highlands. Then there’s #Ziway, known for its fish, islands and birdlife, and #Ambo, where the famous springs and mineral water have become part of the city’s identity. Ethiopia Hotel, one of the country's oldest #hospitality establishments and a landmark on Yohannes St., has begun to come down. #Demolition is already underway at the conference hall at the rear. Crews are working in the parking area behind corrugated iron sheets, and the main building is slated to follow within days. Its remaining life is not expected to stretch beyond October this year. Seven small adjoining shops, among them boutiques and cosmetics stores, sit within the demolition plan, and their tenants have already moved out. Points of Connection: Ethiopia & Beyond Some places are more than points on a #map. They are where people meet, where journeys begin and end, and where Ethiopia connects within and to the outside #world. A collection celebrating these points of #connection - linking communities and cities within Ethiopia, while opening #pathways to the world beyond. Can Nairobi Modernise without losing its Soul? The fourth session of the Nairobi Biennale Heritage Talk Series is featured in People Daily, highlighting the discussions on safeguarding the places, cultures, and #collectivememories that shape our cities. As #Nairobi continues to evolve, preserving heritage goes beyond protecting buildings into sustaining #identity, fostering belonging, and ensuring our shared stories endure for future generations. "How to read an African Cities?" Is a short diagnostic #handbook based on field observation in Addis Abeba. The main idea is simple: Before #redesigning an African city, we need to read what is already working, what is failing, who is coordinating daily #life, and what the formal #plan cannot see. Too often, African cities are judged by what they lack. Less often, they are studied through the systems people have already built to move, trade, wait, repair, adapt, and #survive. This handbook is not a final answer. It is a field method. A way to slow down before intervention. A way to ask better questions before drawing new plans. The handbook is prepared by Brook Abebe. #architecture #city #urbaninsight #ethiopia #feature #africa #addisabeba 📌 Design for Humanity. @NArcHomeArchitecture
