A very useful post on #LISTENING If you are planning to take the IELTS test after 3-5 months, here’s how you should spend the first 2 months(to improve listening) During these months, you should focus mostly on improving your listening comprehension. Again, it's not about how many listening tests you complete — it's about how much time you spend watching/listening to English content. I have seen students completing all Cambridge practice books and still score 5.5-6.0 in the Listening test. During the first 8 weeks, you should spend 80% of your Listening prep time watching English content and 20% on actual listening tests. Master the 80% If you spend 15 hours a week on your listening skill, spend 12 hours on this: find a TV show, YouTuber, and what have you, and just keep watching it(with subtitles until you don’t need them). Make sure that you watch something interesting so you keep coming back to it. While watching it, try to do the following a) Take note of the words/phrases that you don’t know b) Make sure you understand each sentence(slow it down if you have to) Remember, in this phase, consistency is more important than anything else: cant always learn the words? Keep watching English content. Cant always understand it? Keep watching English content. You don’t feel like going to school/university? Keep watching English content. Your boyfriend/girlfriend broke up with you? Keep watching English content. In about 8-10 weeks, you’ll find listening audios much much easier to understand. It is as simple as that. Don’t forget the 20% Once or twice a week, you should do one IELTS Listening test and you should do this in three layers: 1. Do the test and pay attention to the following: a) Learn how to analyze the questions, especially in part 1 and 4 b) Learn to take notes, especially part 2 and 3. Here’s a post on how to do it Note: you can pause in between the sections to analyze better 2. Analyze mistakes a) Listen to each part again – with no script – and try to find what you missed b) Understand why you made a mistake. Usually students make mistakes in part 2 and 3 because the speaker(s) try to confuse you and sound like they mention all the options. Find where exactly the speaker(s) confused you(pay attention to ‘but’) 3. Push Push Push. Now it’s time to work with the script to be done with the test once and for all. a) Find where exactly you made a mistake b) Learn every single word that you don’t know c) Match the synonyms/paraphrase – words from the questions and their alternatives in the recording Doing just one test probably takes 2 hours or so, which is perfect considering you only do this once or twice a week. A word of encouragement: LISTENING is the easiest skill to improve. By doing the basic and simple things, you can get 8-9 in 2-3 months, if you are an upper-intermediate users. But it's not like you wake up one day and start nailing listening tests.

You need to deal with the passages in three layers: 1. The initial flirting stage, which includes the following actions: a) correctly analyzing the questions b) reading the passage to find answers c) matching paraphrase and creating synonym tables 2. Becoming official, which can be broken down into the following: a) analyzing your mistakes b) understanding why you made the mistake(s). Usually students make mistakes due to the following reasons: —the lack of vocabulary —the sentence is too long to comprehend even though the words are familiar —because they dont really match synonyms —the text is too heavy(usually with passage 3) 3. Engagement a) learn the vocabulary from the text b) try to translate everything so that you’ll be able to explain the passage. Bonus step: She said yes😍 Once you have done all of these, ask these four questions: 1. Have I matched all the synonyms and paraphrase 2. Have I understood and learned from my mistakes? 3. Have I learned all the important vocabulary? 4. Can I now explain/translate/understand the passage and questions and answers? You need to keep pushing until you say YES to all of these questions:) All of this will take somewhere around 60-90 minutes (sometimes more) if you are an upper-intermediate user. Doing this every day with one passage will produce better results than completing 4-5 passages a day with no such analyses. Forget about the timed practice— you can start doing it just a month or so before your exam. It is also when you should start focusing on quantity to be familiar with as many authentic passages as you can.
