🎓 We're recruiting a doctoral student in computational physics of many-particle quantum systems! 🏫 Join the Division of Mathematical Physics at Lund University and contribute to cutting-edge research in theoretical and computational quantum physics. 🔎 This doctoral project focuses on developing advanced computational methods to investigate the behaviour of ultra-cold atomic and molecular quantum gases. Total Solar Eclipse Over Spain 🌑☀️ 📸 Image Credit & Copyright: Ruiyu Zhang 📝 Text: Keighley Rockcliffe (NASA GSFC, UMBC CSST, CRESST II) On August 12th, 2026, the Moon totally eclipsed the Sun, casting its shadow across Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal. 🌍 Today’s image features two total solar eclipses viewed from Zaragoza, Spain: one over the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar and the other reflecting in the Ebro River. 🏛️🌊 For a few moments, Spain saw its first major total solar eclipse since 1905. Witnessing totality may bring a chill in the air 🌬️, quieting of birds 🐦, confused insect chirps 🦗, and shared awe. 🤩 It’s the corona’s time to shine as the Sun’s bright disk is blocked by the Moon. Among other reasons to study eclipses, they help scientists understand why the corona is millions of degrees hotter than the Sun’s surface. 🔥 Enthusiastic citizens can contribute by recording wildlife responses, imaging the corona, and monitoring air temperature and clouds. 📸🌡️

🤓 What is chromatic aberration and why do optical engineers spend so much time trying to get rid of it? ✨ When white light passes through an optic, each wavelength (color) is refracted (bent) by a slightly different amount 🌈 That means blue light, green light, and red light don't all focus at exactly the same point through a lens 🌠 The result? Instead of one sharp focal point, you can get colored fringes around objects and a loss of image sharpness 💻 Optical engineers have several ways to fight it, including combining different types of glass, carefully designing multiple lens elements, and using specialized optical coatings 🪄 The goal is to make all those different wavelengths behave as similarly as possible, bringing them together into the same focal plane 🌐 This video is from the Larry Laser YouTube/Instagram/TikTok channel, where you can find lots of other optics demos and explanations! @PhysicsStation

🎓 We're recruiting a PhD student in Experimental Quantum Materials to investigate the microscopic origin of the Thermal Hall Effect. 🔎 Based at the Division for Synchrotron Radiation Research, Department of Physics, Lund University, this exciting project will explore how heat is transported in quantum materials under magnetic fields using inelastic neutron scattering. The research aims to uncover the mechanisms behind the thermal Hall effect and contribute to our fundamental understanding of quantum matter. 👩‍🏫 The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Elizabeth Blackburn, in close collaboration with scientists at ILL - Institut Laue Langevin in Grenoble, France, where a significant part of the project will be carried out.
