The story of TNF-a

Lloyd J. Old (1933–2011) was an American cancer immunologist widely regarded as the “father of modern tumour immunology.” He transformed the study of how the immune system interacts with cancer, establishing key concepts that underpin today’s immunotherapy treatments. Old’s research and leadership helped move cancer immunology from the margins of medicine into mainstream clinical science.

William B. Coley (1862–1936) was an American surgeon and medical researcher best known as the “father of cancer immunotherapy.” Working at the New York Cancer Hospital, he pioneered the use of bacterial injections—later called Coley’s Toxins—to stimulate patients’ immune systems to fight tumours, laying the conceptual groundwork for modern immuno-oncology.
