Today, the Transport Minister Jerry Buttimer said all drivers must take “personal responsibility” for road safety in Ireland, stating that so far, 110 people have died on Irish roads this year. The government is always using the total death count as an excuse to push more anti-motorist laws and lower speed limits. While we should always try to do our best, it’s unrealistic to expect zero deaths on the roads. Of the 110 road deaths so far this year, the Minister doesn’t specify single-vehicle collisions. Last year’s RSA data shows 54% of fatalities were single-vehicle, often tied to loss of control. Impairment played a big role; 2016-2020 coronial data on 316 drivers found 35% with alcohol, and 14% with cocaine. Seatbelt non-use was also a factor in 15% of 2025 deaths. Personal responsibility really matters here. Ireland ranks around seventh safest in the EU 27 Member States for road deaths, with 34 per million people, well above the EU average of 43. Irish car prices are heavily inflated by VRT taxes, which often account for around half the cost of a new vehicle. If the government truly cared about road safety, it’d make safer, modern cars more affordable instead of pricing most people out of the market.
