Why do good employees stay silent? Many workplace incidents don’t start with a mistake. They start when someone notices a problem but doesn’t speak up. Whether it’s fear of challenging a supervisor, assuming someone else will raise it, or worrying about being seen as difficult, silence can impact safety, decision-making, innovation and team culture. Ask yourself: Would your employees tell you if something was wrong? The SISO EXCO had the pleasure of an informal lunch engagement with Mr Silas Sng, Commissioner for Workplace Safety and Health, and his team from Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC). The session also provided an opportunity for the new SISO EXCO team to connect with the Commissioner and his team, fostering stronger relationships as we begin a new term of collaboration. It was a valuable platform to exchange insights on current WSH priorities and reaffirm our shared commitment to advancing workplace safety and health in Singapore. We appreciate the open and meaningful discussions and look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the Commissioner and his teams.
Dear Members, We would like to bring your attention to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM)'s Nationwide Voluntary Safety Time-Out initiative. We encourage you to review the information below and stay updated on these important workplace safety measures. Over the past four weeks, seven workers lost their lives in five workplace incidents, bringing the total number of workplace fatalities to 21 this year. In view of the recent fatalities, Ministry of Manpower, with support from the Workplace Safety and Health Council, will be taking the following measures: 1. Nationwide Safety Time-Out (STO) A nation-wide Safety Time-Out will be conducted for two weeks, starting today (26 June). Employers should use the Safety Time-Out to review work processes, reinforce risk controls, engage workers and supervisors on workplace risks, address safety gaps where necessary, and pay attention to vehicle-related activities, individual worker lapses, and immediate response following an accident. 2. Enhanced Enforcement Measures • Increase the composition fine for first-time workplace safety offences detected during inspections from $2,000 to $3,000, with higher fines for repeat or more serious offences. • Increase the minimum duration of Stop-Work Orders (SWO) from 5 weeks to 8 weeks for companies with workplace safety lapses warranting a SWO. • Debar companies from hiring new migrant workers for 3 months in egregious cases involving serious workplace safety lapses resulting in fatal or serious accidents. We encourage members to actively support the Nationwide Voluntary Safety Time-Out by working with your management to identify workplace risks, reinforce safe work practices, and foster a strong safety culture.
