The Bandenkampfabzeichen (“Anti-Partisan Warfare Badge”) was one of the rarest decorations of the Third Reich, awarded to those who participated in operations against Soviet partisan forces. After the failure to capture Moscow and the withdrawal from the Caucasus front, many Georgian units were redeployed to the dense forests, mountainous regions, and devastated urban areas of Eastern and Central Europe. There, under extremely harsh conditions, they were tasked with dismantling partisan networks supported and supplied by Soviet intelligence and elements of the local population. The 1st Caucasian field battalion of the Luftwaffe was formed in Pyatigorsk in the second half of 1942, and was staffed by 270 people from the North Caucasus. The battalion was assigned to the 4th Luftwaffe Air Fleet as support personnel. From July 1942, the 4th Air Fleet was commanded by Wolfram von Richthofen. The battalion's tasks included guarding airfields, ammunition and fuel depots, and other Luftwaffe military facilities. The battalion was stationed in such cities as Essentuki, Kislovodsk, then it was transferred from the North Caucasus to Ukraine and was located in Krivoy Rog, and on March 26, 1943, by order of the command of Army Group A, the battalion was redeployed from Krivoy Rog to Bakhchisaray (Crimea), where in early April the battalion personnel joined the sonderverband Bergmann. Commanded the Hauptmann battalion (promoted to major in the fall of 1943) Luftwaffe Friedrich Baumhauer.

Combat training of Caucasian auxiliary troops. North Caucasus , September 1942. On August 2, 1942, from the Caucasian-Mohammedan Legion and the Georgian Legion, representatives of the peoples of the North Caucasus were separated and united into the North Caucasian Legion with headquarters in the Polish village of Wesola. By the end of 1942, three battalions were formed and ready to be sent to the front: 1) 800 (Circassian) battalion consisting of 900 North Caucasians and 40 Germans under the leadership of F. Kurpanek. 2) 801 (Dagestan) battalion consisting of 920 natives of Dagestan and 27 Germans under the leadership of Captain Everling, then Captain Burckhardt. 3) 802 (mixed) battalion consisting of 900 North Caucasians and 37 Germans under the leadership of Captain Cap. At the beginning of 1943, another battalion was created in Vesola under the number 803. In the second half of 1943, three more battalions were formed under the numbers 835, 836 and 837.
