Septrin vs Coflin — Are They the Same? Many people take Septrin or other antibiotic anytime they have cough. Some even combine it with cough syrups like Coflin, believing they are treating the same problem. But are they really the same? Not at all. Septrin is an antibiotic. It contains Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole and is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria. Coflin on the other hand is a cough syrup. Depending on the type (Linctus or Expectorant), it helps relieve cough by suppressing it or loosening mucus in the chest. So they work in completely different ways. Coflin helps with the symptom (cough), while Septrin targets certain bacterial infections. Important to know: Not every cough needs antibiotics. Many coughs are caused by viruses, irritation, allergies, cold, or dust. In such cases, antibiotics like Septrin may not help. Antibiotics may only be considered when a healthcare professional suspects a bacterial infection — for example in certain chest infections or other bacterial conditions where such medicines are appropriate. In the community, some people also recommend mixing painkillers such as Diclofenac, Felvin (piroxicam), and Ibuprofen together at the same time. But it is important to understand something. Celecoxib, Diclofenac, Piroxicam (Felvin), and Ibuprofen belong to a group of medicines called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). They work in similar ways to reduce pain and inflammation. Arthrotec itself already contains Diclofenac together with Misoprostol, which is added to help protect the stomach. Taking multiple NSAIDs together may increase the risk of unwanted effects such as stomach irritation, ulcers, bleeding, or strain on the kidneys.
