Death of King Philip (Metacomet) August 12, 1676 📍Bristol, Rhode Island King Philip, was the leader of the Wampanoag tribe during King Philip's War, a conflict between Indian tribes and English colonists in New England. On August 12, 1676, Metacomet was killed in a swamp near Mount Hope in Bristol, Rhode Island. He was reportedly shot and killed by a Pocasset Indian named John Alderman, who was assisting the English colonists in hunting down Metacomet. Metacomet's death marked the end of the war and the defeat of the Indian resistance in New England. @HistoricalNE
