How about a little lesson in history about Iran. Did you know that in 1953, there was a prime minister of Iran called Mohammad Mosaddegh who was widely viewed by historians as a patriotic, democratically elected nationalist reformer who sought to secure Iran's sovereignty, particularly by nationalizing the oil industry. Part of his plans having been just elected was to curb the powers of the Shah. He was also known for successfully nationalized the British-controlled oil industry, aiming to take control of Iran's natural resources and end foreign exploitation. Because of this, the UK employed an economic boycott against Iran which caused several problems for the Iranian Prime Minister. This led to the CIA and MI6 Coup of 1953. Hmm......... Who is at fault here? We are! The US and UK. Mohammad Mosaddegh was eventually arrested and deposed. The 1953 Coup actually had a name in the CIA. Operation Ajax. The UK MIG called it Operation Boot. After the coup, the Shah fully regained power and became a close ally of the US. To put it in perspective, the US and UK had quite the assembly of forces there in Iran, but operating in civilian clothes. There was a massive presence of US and UK military personnel, intelligence agents, and contractors in Iran prior to the 1979 revolution that removed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. While there were official bases and training missions, a significant number of these personnel operated in civilian clothes, particularly in the 1970s, as technicians, advisors, and intelligence officers. Iran was known more for it's intelligence value than a military one where we had multiple NSA sites along the boarder with Russia which were used to monitor telemetry from ICBM tests from the Soviet Union.
