Pandemic Reflection Pool - Charles Krblich   August 7, 2026  The revelations of the last two weeks bring to mind the very first two weeks, six years ago today. The truths now laid bare are a song that once meant something to us — music that helped us move past heartbreak, yet whose melody now recalls thoughts and feelings long buried. Soft and inescapable, a profound melancholy returns. I have often wondered what psychological mechanism marked the difference between those people who complied with any absurdity and those who never did. Today, Homer’s myth of heroism, The Odyssey, plays in the theaters. Meanwhile playing on the televisions is another version of the Narcissus myth, this time pleading the Fifth. To quickly recap of The Myth of Narcissus, Narcissus is an exceptionally handsome young man — whom everyone fell in love with — and Echo, a mountain nymph, eventually came under his enchantment and fell in love with him too. Echo was unfortunately cursed: She was only able to repeat the last words spoken by someone else. She could only echo Narcissus’s words and was cruelly rejected by him. She eventually wasted away until nothing remained of her but her voice — an “echo.” Narcissus on the other hand was punished by the goddess of retribution, Nemesis. She led him to a clear pool of water where Narcissus saw his own reflection and fell in love with it. He was unable to leave the pool, and refusing food, slowly wasted away from unrequited love for his own image. When he died, a flower sprung up — the Narcissus or Daffodil. Today, the word narcissism is used to describe a wide range of applications, but the origin myth remains the same — a man who cannot move past his own perceived importance, his lover who can only echo his words, and their shared ruin — both undone by unrequited love. I have always been struck by what I considered an anomaly of history; at the very least a strange coincidence of circumstance that crosses time and culture. Why, for instance, does Nicolae Ceaușescu’s wife Elena exclaim, “Shame on you. I brought you up as a mother. I raised you,” to the soldiers binding her hands and preparing to execute her? One of the soldiers allegedly replied to the Romanian dictator’s wife that she was no mother, since she had killed their mothers. She died incapable of understanding how her actions led to her outcome. Why, for instance, does Erich Mielke, the Minister for State Security (head of the East German Stasi) exclaim to parliament after the Wall fell, “I love…I love all people.” He later spent his final years in a modest East Berlin flat, widely despised, politically irrelevant, and incapable of understanding how his actions led to his outcome. Of course, there are other examples, Lavrentiy Beria, Pierre Laval, Julius Streicher, Wojciech Jaruzelski, Augusto Pinochet, etc. All of these people once wielded near-absolute power over their countrymen, yet they were all doomed — unable to move past their own perceived importance — and either executed or reduced to living ordinary lives, publicly hated, with immense legal vulnerability, and the permanent loss of status. Some people report headaches, sleep issues, and sensitivity. Constant Exposure: Unlike your phone, the meter sits on your wall all day, every day. Fact: Long-term studies are still limited. COST + BILL SHOCK Higher Bills: Many households report bills going up after install. Old meters are often under-read. New meters capture real usage + time-of-use tariffs make peak hours (5pm–9pm) more expensive. Harder to Verify: Digital readings vs watching an old spinning disk. Disputes are tougher. Tariff Changes: Municipalities use smart data to charge more when demand is high. PRIVACY CONCERNS Tracks Your Life: Records usage every 15–30 minutes. Can show when you're home, cooking, or watching TV. Data Ownership: Eskom, municipality, and vendors hold the data. Risk of hacking or misuse. CONTROL + RELIABILITY Remote Disconnect: Municipality can cut power remotely for non-payment, no visit needed. Malfunctions: Some meters over-read or fail. Testing them is harder than with analogue meters. Signal Problems: Weak network = estimated readings = surprise bills later. SAFETY + CYBER RISKS Installation Risk: Rushed installs have caused overheating and fires in other countries. Cyber Risk: Being connected to a network makes the grid a target for hackers. NO CHOICE In many areas, once a smart meter is installed, you cannot go back to analogue. You pay for it through tariffs. E-WASTE + LITHIUM BATTERIES Smart meters have a small lithium battery inside to keep time and send data during power outages. Battery life is 10 years. E-waste: Lithium batteries can't go in a normal landfill. They leak heavy metals and can catch fire. SA has very limited e-waste recycling for millions of meters. Fire Risk: Damaged lithium cells can overheat. There have been meter fires overseas linked to the battery. Toxic Waste: Batteries contain cobalt, nickel, manganese that leach into soil and water if dumped. Replacement Cost: When the battery dies, municipalities usually replace the whole meter. That cost comes back to us via tariffs. Waste Wave Coming: By 2035–2040 we face millions of dead smart meters with nowhere to go. WUGUSU QUESTION Do the benefits outweigh the costs? Smart meters help Eskom detect theft and outages. But the financial, privacy, health, and waste trade-offs are carried by you, the consumer, hence higher electricity costs. There are two things in life for which you pay a very high price: laziness and cowardice. I have seen it over and over again with people I have come across in my life. You have to be prepared to work at everything, not just professionally, you have to work hard at being a good parent, a good partner, a good sibling, a good friend, a good child and a good human being. Everything requires time and effort. Even good health requires hard work; you have to try to buy fresh organic foods which you may not find in the convenience store around the corner, so you might have to travel further to find it, you will  have to cook for yourself, you will have to research natural alternatives for healing and detoxifying and supplements that will keep you strong. You have to exercise and you have to make the right lifestyle choices: no alcohol, no smoking, no porn, no drugs and no dumbing down reality tv. The lazy alternative: ready made food, which is full of toxicity and GMO ingredients, drugs for any health issue, prozac for emotional or mental conditions, alcohol to drown your sorrows, recreational drugs to have a good time, porn as entertainment, and watching crap on tv so as not to think about it all. Well good luck to you with these choices! They all lead to the same place: physical, mental and emotional suffering down the line. Your choice. Cowardice is just as dangerous, if you don’t have the courage to stand up for yourself, to speak up, to take the less trodden path and to say ‘no’ to the things you know are not good for you, then you are back on the road that leads nowhere good. Your choice. Every step you take, every choice you make, every thought you have, every word you say, is either leading you in the right, or the wrong direction, so watch yourself very closely and choose wisely. Choose to be ready to work, choose to be ready to risk, choose to be ready to evolve, choose to be ready to become better, healthier and happier.
