Achromous

The Prussian Hussar https://achromous.substack.com/p/the-prussian-hussar Loosely based on Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann’s “Nußknacker und Mausekönig” (Nutcracker and Mouse King), published in 1816. Through the nutcracker are interwoven bits of history related to Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742 - 1819): he was a very enthusiastic Prussian Commander in the battles against Napoléon. So enthused, he was nicknamed “Marschall Vorwärts” (Marshal Forward). During the roaring twenties in Berlin, a boy has received a fine hussar nutcracker for his birthday. When calamity enters his impoverished life, he finds the wooden hussar has come alive. With the essence of a commander and a vigor for life, the hussar will not let harm come to the boy.
