Job market analysis - Tashkent For the last 3 months I am too active on hh.uz Not looking for a job, just analyzing the market and requirements for junior finance specialists. Based on my 3 months research, I have done the following rough conclusions: - Employers mainly prefer specialists with 1-3 year work experience for junior positions - For juniors the market is ready to pay starting from UZS 8-12 mln monthly - Majority of employers understate the past work experience of the candidates - Opportunities for Big4 staff are there, but offerings are lower in monetary terms - 5/2 jobs are less. Mainly 6/1 jobs are on offer - Juniors barely meet the requirements of the entry position - Limited supervision, but high expectations at the workplace - Employees prefer workplaces with cozy office and preferably in city center. Career plan As much as it may sound vague, general, or overused, a well-thought-out career plan is essential. Had a few calls over the last months with junior, mid-senior finance specialists via Connected platform. Decided to share some key takeaways: Case 1 A student who graduated in 2022 approached me for advice on transitioning into the world of investments. He had been working as a budgeting specialist at a company with an annual turnover of USD 100 million. Despite his experience, making the jump into investments is tough. Investment funds, depending on the role, rarely hire professionals from lesser-known companies who have narrow, functional exposure. As harsh as it sounds, the door to Investments is almost closed for him at this stage. Case 2 Another professional, with five years of banking experience and good English skills, wanted to switch into a corporate FP&A role. Again, not an easy transition. The banking world and the corporate finance world operate on different dynamics: different reporting structures, financial statements, and skillsets. Large corporates don’t usually hand over their finance function to someone from a banking background unless it’s at a junior level. But can someone with five years of experience, a family, and two children afford to start over on a junior salary of $1,000? Unlikely. And that’s where many people get stuck. There are more cases. Let me share my thoughts and views of professionals in my network about market outlook in finance job market: Booming economy GDP is growing and is expected to reach USD 200bn soon --> growing GDP means maturing companies --> maturing companies need qualified talents Changing attitude 5 years ago, you only had vacancy for Accountant and Economist in hh.uz. Now you see vacancy for Fin Analyst, Fin Manager, CFO, Investment analyst, Budgeting Specialist, Strategy analyst and many more. Lack of talent Look at Korzinka & Uzum as an example. Key C-level positions are hold by expats. Strong signal that there is still room to grow and learn for locals Privatization Look at OTP Ipoteka Bank. OTP acquired Ipoteka and started to hire top talents, qualified, experienced people from other banks, big4 firms and graduates of foreign unis Privatization of SQB and Asaka Bank is coming. Transformation of SOEs SOEs are being transformed. Open-minded project managers, executives, and decision-makers are starting to build their internal/local team. An Underrated Skill Recently, I was asked to interview a candidate for a Deputy CFO/Financial Manager role. The candidate had 4 years of experience at a Big4 firm. Technically, he was solid. So,I shifted to a more conceptual question:“After 4 years in consulting at a Big4, what would you say is your key takeaway?” His response surprised me in a good way: “I learned when and how to ask questions. The ability to ask the right questions and get the right answers is underrated in the market. But the Big4 taught me how to communicate effectively to retrieve the right information without sounding uninformed.” This resonated deeply with me. During my own time at KPMG, I realized the same thing. Success in consulting especially at a Big4 often hinges on your ability to: - Ask the right questions - Extract meaningful answers - Present those answers in the right format - And deliver them in the right way to the client. Mastering this skill builds confidence. And once you feel that confidence, you can call yourself a sound specialist and can exit If you don’t feel that confidence yet working at Big4, there’s no rush. Stay, learn, and grow. I wanted to share this here because it’s more about career development than technical accounting. Sometimes, the soft skills are what truly set you apart. PS: I remember my manager pushing me to answer to my own questions before going to the client and asking. Exit multiple Exit multiple is kinda the level of salary you are ready to exit your current position For instance, if your salary is $1,000 and the exit multiple is 2x, that means the market is offering you $2,000 if you leave As you can see the exit multiple is solid 2x in the first 7 years of your Big4 journey, or from A2 to M2 position (S3 and M1 trades-off) Yet, it decreases from M3 position. That's not because the market offers you less, that's because the firm starts to pay you much) Even the short tenure of 1-2 years gives you a big push, which is why I always encourage people to step in there For your information: A1 stands for Associate 1st year S1 stands for Senior 1st year M1 stands for Manager 1st year SM1 stands for Senior Manager 1st year PS: I personally could not make this post without the assistance of ex-Big4 managers and Senior managers as I had no idea how much they are paid Also, consider that the multiples are median indicators.
