Lab-Grown Diamonds: A Sustainable Alternative to Mined Diamonds 📍 Why in News? ✅ Growing concerns over the environmental and social impacts of natural diamond mining have increased interest in lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) as a sustainable, affordable, and traceable alternative. India is also promoting indigenous LGD production and research. 📍 What are Lab-Grown Diamonds? ✅ Diamonds produced in laboratories using: ✅ HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) method ✅ CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) method ✅ They are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. 📍 Why are Lab-Grown Diamonds Sustainable? ✅ Require significantly less water and energy than conventional diamond mining. ✅ Avoid deforestation, soil erosion, water pollution, and habitat destruction associated with mining. ✅ Eliminate concerns related to forced labour, conflict diamonds, and illegal trade. ✅ Can have a much lower carbon footprint when manufactured using renewable energy. ✅ Promote resource efficiency and support the circular economy. 📍 Challenges with Natural Diamond Mining ✅ Depletion of natural diamond reserves and declining production. ✅ High environmental costs, including ecosystem degradation and pollution. ✅ Associated with conflict financing, smuggling, and labour exploitation in some regions. ✅ Mining workers face occupational health risks due to prolonged exposure to hazardous conditions. 📍 India’s Push for Lab-Grown Diamonds ✅ Union Budget 2023–24 announced measures to promote indigenous LGD production and research. ✅ IIT Madras received a ₹243 crore grant to establish the India Centre for Lab-Grown Diamond (InCent-LGD). ✅ The centre aims to develop indigenous capabilities in diamond seeds, machinery, and manufacturing technologies. 📍 Applications ✅ Jewellery industry. ✅ Cutting and drilling tools. ✅ Semiconductor manufacturing. ✅ Quantum computing. ✅ Protective industrial coatings. 📍 UPSC Prelims Pointer ✅ HPHT and CVD are the two principal technologies used to manufacture lab-grown diamonds, which are identical to natural diamonds in composition and crystal structure. 📍 UPSC Mains Practice Question ✅ Q.
