The US Securities and Exchange Commission is preparing an “innovation exemption” for tokenized securities, potentially creating a regulatory pathway for stocks to trade on blockchain networks around the clock rather than being confined to conventional US exchange hours. The initiative is being developed under SEC Chairman Paul Atkins as part of the agency’s broader push to move portions of American securities markets onchain. The exemption would provide selected market participants with relief from certain existing securities-market requirements while they test tokenized securities under defined regulatory conditions.

On this day in 2025 Cryptocurrency exchange operator Bullish was valued at about $13.16 billion after its shares more than doubled in their NYSE debut, underscoring investor confidence in the sector and lifting prospects for future U.S. listings by other digital asset firms.

On this day in 2022 the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash, which has been used to launder more than $7 billion worth of virtual currency since its creation in 2019.

Brazil’s central bank has ordered virtual asset service providers to hold certain crypto transfers for up to 24 hours from Jan. 1, 2027, adding a new anti-fraud layer to the country’s expanding digital asset rulebook.  The threshold applies either to one transaction or a customer’s combined transactions during the same day. Smaller transfers can also face additional review when a provider’s risk policies identify reasons for closer scrutiny. The central bank said the measure responds to growing use of virtual assets, including stablecoins, to move proceeds from financial fraud quickly, sometimes beyond Brazil or into wallets controlled directly by users.

On this day in 2021 Poly Network was attacked by anonymous hackers. The attack transferred over $610 million to the hackers. All assets were returned to Poly Network over the following 15 days. It was one of the largest security incidents in DeFi history in terms of mark-to-market value.
