#bluesrockrecap 2021 Today we’ve got a slightly weird flashback. Let’s take a look back at what was played on our main channel of 50 Shades of Blues Rock in August 2023 - specifically, which blues rock hits from 2021 (5 years ago) were featured there 3 years awhile back. There were 55 of them out of a total of 720 tracks. Now available on our Blues Rock 2000–2025 web channel. Here we go. Highlights coming soon on the Blues Rock Charts telegram channel.
“Toxic blues-rock” is, first and foremost, a lyrical theme within blues-rock that focuses primarily on toxic love, abusive relationships, and destructive behavior. In terms of subgenres, this often includes “Dirty Blues,” “Sludgy Blues,” and even “Slime Rock” - an old-school, raw style of blues rock that focuses on taboo topics. The theme itself is borrowed from Britney Spears’ hit “Toxic” and the literal names of bands or songs: there are local bands called Toxic Blues, and albums such as *Toxic Waste Blues* by Corrosive Elements. This is far from Acid Rock. Acid rock is a historically established and legitimate musical subgenre, whereas “toxic blues rock” is not. Nevertheless, they share very close musical origins. “Toxic” blues rock is descriptive slang, whereas acid rock is an established subgenre encompassing a heavy, loud, improvisation-heavy variant of 1960s psychedelic rock. The musical foundation is closely tied to traditional 12-bar blues progressions and rhythms. It combines the raw energy of garage punk with long, unstructured trance-like jams. Yes, acid rock is heavily influenced by classic blues and hard rock. Key artists include Aerosmith, Gary Moore, and Jack White (depending on the context), as well as Jimi Hendrix, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, and Jefferson Airplane. Overlap: Heavy Psych and Proto-Metal. The reason these two concepts can be confused is that acid rock evolved directly from blues rock. In the late 1960s, bands took traditional heavy blues rock (such as Cream or early Led Zeppelin), cranked up the volume, added extreme fuzz distortion, and turned short blues songs into 15-minute trippy improvisations. As part of the Toxic Blues Rock project, we plan to release several episodes featuring songs that sound distinctly “toxic” - they often sound heavy, distorted, and sometimes overwhelming or intensely psychedelic. Let’s get started. The new project will be released on our website of 50 Shades of Blues Rock, in the “Cult Blues Rock” section. Each episode will feature 50 drawn-out blues rock tracks lasting 5½ minutes or longer. TTL is 1 month. A general overview of the project’s focus will be available soon on our telegram channel of Blues Rock Charts.

#bluesrockballads 2000. The year 2000 marked a turning point for blues-rock ballads, marking a departure from the overly polished, bombastic "power ballads" of the 1980s and '90s, giving way to a raw, minimalist, and deeply emotional sound. The genre entered the new millennium blending timeless roots blues with modern production and elements of alternative rock. Instead of relying heavily on massive synthesizers and "walls of sound," 2000 ballads favored raw acoustic guitars, warm tube amps, and open vocals. Lyrics moved beyond the glamorous, theatrical heartache of previous decades, focusing on darker, more realistic themes such as psychological struggle, isolation, and raw vulnerability. Artists actively blended the classic, structural "slow" blues structure with elements of the garage rock, grunge, and neo-soul revivals. This shift can be heard in three major movements that converged at the turn of the century—the garage rock and roots music revivals. Bands like The White Stripes released De Stijl in June 2000, bringing a thoroughly primitive, fiery approach to blues ballads. Legendary figures returned to the studio with modern, aggressive blues textures. R.L. Burnside released I Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down (2000), using loops and dark, modern backdrops to create mesmerizing, slow-tempo masterpieces. Supergroups and mainstream rock bands began incorporating blues elements into their slower tracks. Songs like Creed's "With Arms Wide Open" (2000) dominated the charts, combining massive, soaring rock structures with bluesy chord progressions. Blues-rock guitar of the 2000s was defined by a peculiar paradox: it combined primitive, raw technique with powerful modern amplification. Guitarists abandoned the ultra-fast, clean picking of the late '90s in favor of a more aggressive, deeply expressive approach. Bending strings beyond the pitch (for example, by a minor third instead of a whole step) to simulate a wailing vocal effect. Microbending on minor-third and flat-fifth intervals to create instant harmonic tension. Striking a fretted note while simultaneously bending a string lower to the same pitch creates a dense, chorus-like wall of sound. Active use of open G (D-G-D-G-B-D) and open D (D-A-D-F#-A-D) for powerful, resonant chord resonance. Playing acoustic guitars with electromagnetic soundhole pickups connected directly to distorted tube amps. Microtonal slides allowed for slow transitions to chords rather than playing them cleanly, emphasizing the physical movement across the fretboard. Analog fuzz overdrive relied heavily on vintage fuzz pedals (such as the Big Muff or Fuzz Face) pushed to their limits. Using extreme amp volume to create controlled, sing-song feedback during slow, melodic passages became common. Using the wah-wah pedal incredibly slowly to shape the vocal tone of a note, rather than using it for rhythmic funk patterns, became common. The heavy fingerpicking is also clearly evident here: abandoning the pick and flicking the strings with your fingertips for a sharper, more percussive snap. And, of course, the intentional inclusion of string noise, fret buzz, and slight timing inaccuracies in the final track maximizes the feeling of a live performance. 2000 Top 80 Blues Rock Ballads is already on our website of 50 Shades of Blues Rock. Top 10 will be available soon in telegram on Blues Rock Charts media channel. Stay tuned!

#womenofbluesrock 2023 Review. Women dominated the blues-rock genre in 2023, releasing critically acclaimed albums, winning major industry awards, and headlining international tours. From established vocalists with powerful vocals to virtuoso young slide guitarists, female artists were the driving force behind the genre's most creative collaborations and modern revivals throughout the year. The following list highlights the top women in blues-rock who shaped the genre in 2023. Samantha Fish released the long-awaited collaborative album, Death Wish Blues, with country rocker Jesse Dayton, which topped the Billboard Blues chart and earned a Grammy nomination. Larkin Poe sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell spent 2023 touring their album, Blood Harmony, released in late 2022 and later earning them a Grammy Award. Ellie Venable released her breakthrough album, Real Gone, in early 2023, featuring guitar legends Joe Bonamassa and Buddy Guy. Joanna Connor, Chicago's "Queen of Slide Guitar" has released her album, Best of Me. A fiery blend of blues-rock, funk, and soul, from Gulf Coast Records. Grainy Duffy, the Irish singer-songwriter, made a splash on the international blues scene with the release of her gritty, roots-infused album, Dirt Woman Blues. Susan Tedeschi, co-leader of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, won the "Group of the Year" award at the 2023 Blues Music Awards. Ruthie Foster won the "Contemporary Blues Female Artist" award at the 2023 Blues Music Awards, recognizing her masterful blend of blues, rock, and gospel. Elles Bailey dominated the 2023 UK Blues Awards, winning UK Blues Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for Shining in the Half Light. Beth Hart continued her reign as one of rock's most powerful vocalists, headlining major world tours throughout 2023. Brave Rival, the British band fronted by a female vocalist, was nominated for UK Blues Album of the Year for their debut album, Life's Machine. @bluezrock (Blues Rock) is a Telegram channel dedicated to contemporary and classic blues-rock music. It serves as a community hub for fans, striving to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a "smoky bar with good sound." It has been around since early 2020, although it was created a year earlier. What we do: We regularly share new music, including playlists (e.g., #bluesrockmix), which often contain 50 songs spanning several hours. We publish carefully curated "top 100" charts based on or related to listening trends on our website (bluesrock.top). We also highlight new albums, often focusing on monthly releases or special "5-star" collections. The channel features photos, videos, and links to audio recordings. We also feature themed posts, such as "Female Rockstars" or reviews of specific artists (#outstanding). The Blues Rock Charts channel (added in November 2024) operates as the official media subchannel for the main @bluezrock community. We use it for short music reviews, primarily for Eastern European countries. While the main @bluezrock channel and our website, 50 Shades of Blues Rock, feature massive playlists (often 50 to 100 tracks or more), we use the Blues Rock Charts channel to publish smaller, curated selections. For example, we publish the top 10 or 16 tracks as a short overview. The Charts channel is also used to host thematic subseries, such as our weekly audio broadcasts. If you want to quickly find specific songs without scrolling through hours of audio on the main channel, the Charts subchannel is where we curate the very best tracks. While the exact internal analytics tables for the @bluezrock Telegram channel and the bluesrock.top website are confidential, our audience demographics reflect standard data for the broader blues rock genre and the global Telegram user base. The typical target consumer is broken down by several key demographic characteristics: Age (Adults and Mature Listeners): The audience primarily consists of people aged 35 to 55 years and older. While classic blues rock naturally appeals to an older, nostalgic audience (40+), Telegram's choice of a primary platform appeals to tech-savvy young people (25-35) who actively seek out contemporary guitar-driven music. Gender Ratio: The demographic makeup is predominantly male, averaging approximately 60% male and 40% female. This ratio aligns with traditional rock music fanbases, as well as the target topics of our channels, such as our themed collections. Countries and Geography (Telegram Channels): Significant presence in Europe. Eastern Europe and the CIS region. Since Telegram is the primary app for daily messaging and media content in countries like Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, a large portion of the @bluezrock channel's audience comes from these countries. Western Europe. The bluesrock.top website receives significant organic traffic from regions with large blues rock fan bases, particularly France, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. North America: (bluesrock.top) The primary traffic comes from the United States and Canada, the historical birthplace and largest market for this genre. Asia: Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. There are also many visitors from Australia. In terms of time spent on our publications since their inception, Ukraine has undoubtedly led the way. The average time spent on the site is over one and a half hours. The US follows far behind with around 53 minutes and the UK with around 42 minutes. In Russia, the average hang time is 21 minutes.
