I'm 78 years old. I've made millions. Lost millions. Made it back. And then some. I've been broke. I've been rich. I've been everything in between. And if I could sit across from my 25-year-old self right now — here's exactly what I'd say. 1. Your school lied to you about money. Not intentionally. But completely. They taught you how to work for money. Nobody taught you how to make money work for you. That ONE difference is the difference between retiring rich and dying still paying bills. 2. Your biggest enemy is not your boss. It's your paycheck. The paycheck feels safe. That's the trap. Every month it arrives, you relax. You spend. You repeat. My poor dad had a great paycheck his whole life. He died broke. My rich dad never trusted a paycheck. He built assets that paid him whether he worked or not. Which system are you building? 3. Debt is not your enemy. BAD debt is. Most people hear "debt" and think danger. I hear "debt" and think tool. Student loan debt = bad debt. It makes bankers rich and keeps you poor. Real estate debt, business debt — used correctly — that's debt that pays YOU. School never taught you that difference. Now you know it. 4. Your 20s and 30s are not for playing it safe. This is the one time in your life where failure costs almost nothing. You have no mortgage. No kids depending on you. No legacy at risk. FAIL NOW. Fail fast. Fail cheap. The people who are the most successful at 50 are the ones who failed the most at 25. I failed. Multiple times. Each time I got smarter. 5. The biggest risk is taking no risk at all. I watch young people put $50 a month in a 401k and call themselves "investors." That's not investing. That's hoping. Inflation alone is quietly destroying that money every single year. Real investing means studying. Learning. Taking calculated risks. A 401k is a solution designed by your employer — not by you. 6. You will become who you spend time with. This is the most underrated financial advice I've ever received. If everyone around you is broke and okay with it — you will be too. Find people who are doing what you want to do. Study them. Get close to them. Your network is your net worth. Literally. 7. Start today. Not Monday. Not January. Today. I wasted years waiting for the "right time." There is no right time. There is only right now. Every year you wait to learn about money, build assets, invest — is a year that compound interest is working for someone else instead of you. . . I'm 78. I don't say any of this to scare you. I say it because nobody said it to me when I needed to hear it except my rich dad. Your school won't say it. Your employer won't say it. Your bank definitely won't say it. So I will. The next 10 years of your life will set the foundation for the rest of it. Build wisely. Rich Dad Poora Dad Source
