𝔻𝕀𝔻 𝕐𝕆𝕌 𝕂ℕ𝕆𝕎? 💡 In today’s digital world, social media algorithms often show us content similar to what we have liked, shared, or searched for before. This can create echo chambers, which are online spaces where people mostly see information that supports their existing beliefs while being exposed to fewer different opinions. When people keep seeing the same types of content, they may become more confident in their beliefs and less willing to consider other points of view. Social media algorithms can also strengthen the false consensus effect. This happens when people believe that many others share the same opinions as them, even when this may not be true. There are two main factors that can contribute to echo chambers: Informational influence: This happens when people follow the opinions of others because they believe the group has better or more accurate information. False consensus effect: This happens when people assume that their opinions are commonly shared by others. This can make them feel that their views are correct and reduce their willingness to question them. By understanding these influences, we can make a conscious effort to seek different opinions and information. This can help us become more open-minded, question our assumptions, understand other people better, and develop stronger critical-thinking skills. 𝔻𝕀𝔻 𝕐𝕆𝕌 𝕂ℕ𝕆𝕎? 💡 The Oracle Paradox is the idea that as technology becomes smarter and more complex, it also becomes harder for ordinary people to understand. AI systems, algorithms, and prediction models can make decisions or forecasts that even experts struggle to fully explain. Think of an oracle in ancient times. People went to a priest or prophet because they believed that person had access to hidden knowledge. Today, many people treat AI and complex algorithms in a similar way: the model says this, so it must be true. The problem is that most people cannot see or understand how these systems reach their conclusions. Because of that, technical experts become the modern version of priests—they are the ones who can interpret the machine. When people feel that important systems are beyond their understanding, they often respond in one of two ways: 1. They trust the experts and the technology completely, accepting whatever the system says. 2. They stop trusting experts altogether and turn to alternative beliefs such as conspiracy theories, astrology, manifestation, spiritual ideas, or theories like “we live in a simulation.” So the paradox is this: the more rational and intelligent our machines become, the more they can make people think and behave in ways that resemble religion or mysticism. 𝔻𝕀𝔻 𝕐𝕆𝕌 𝕂ℕ𝕆𝕎? 💡 Large language models (LLMs) — the kinds of AI that power chatbots like ChatGPT — learn to generate language by training on vast amounts of text. World models, meanwhile, learn how to simulate worlds by training on the rules of physics, the properties of objects, and the dynamics of physical interactions. Once trained, they can generate persistent worlds for users to explore. What’s particularly striking about the AI industry’s focus on world models is that they demand a different kind of engagement from users than today’s popular forms of entertainment. You can’t just passively scroll through a world model; you have to actively explore it. Consider what companies like Iconic are building: “living, adaptive worlds” where AI characters “retain memory across sessions and evolve over time.” These are worlds designed to feel alive — they respond to us and remember us. The potential applications for these models are remarkable, from education to entertainment, but they also raise questions about the relationship between users and digital environments. Ultimately, the impact of world models on younger generations will depend on how we choose to engage with them. We can approach them as tools for learning and creation, using them to develop new skills and explore new possibilities. 𝔻𝕀𝔻 𝕐𝕆𝕌 𝕂ℕ𝕆𝕎? 💡 The economy of “xuanxue,” or spiritual mysticism, has boomed in recent years, with a range of price points. On popular Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu, the hashtag #xuanxue has been viewed over 5 billion times to date. Young people are no longer just paying for a product, but “paying for a form of self-definition and an emotional container,” said Linda Yu, a general manager at marketing agency Red Ant Asia. “Some brands have recently shifted spiritual consumption from the margins to the mainstream.” Mainstream consumer brands like Lululemon and the coffee chain M Stand have launched spirituality-themed marketing campaigns in China in recent years. Bubble Tea brand Molly Tea’s collaboration with a 1,700-year-old temple in Hangzhou featured co-branded cup sleeves, fridge magnets and fragrance diffusers. Burger King even partnered with the Taoist site on Mount Longhu for Lunar New Year, with a “God of Wealth” figurine available, for an extra 38 yuan ($5.62), with fast food meal deals. The viral handbag brand Songmont has a podcast that invites famous directors or actors to discuss topics like self-acceptance and creativity in contemplative, two-hour episodes.
