Kenya Launches Drive to Triple Coffee Output as It Pursues Direct Export Markets #EBR_News Jul 27, 2026 Kenya has launched a nationwide coffee revitalization programme aimed at tripling annual coffee production to more than 150,000 metric tones by the 2028/29 financial year, as the government seeks to expand cultivation, strengthen cooperatives and increase farmers' earnings while positioning the country as a global coffee processing hub. The programme, announced by Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Wycliffe Oparanya, targets a threefold increase from the country's current annual production of about 50,000 tones. The initiative will be implemented jointly by national and county governments, agricultural institutions and industry stakeholders to expand coffee-growing areas and improve sector productivity, according to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation. As part of the reforms, the Kenyan government has allocated US$7.7 million in the current financial year to support coffee sector programmes, including farmer assistance and institutional reforms. County steering committees will identify suitable coffee-growing areas, assess farmers' needs and coordinate the distribution of seedlings, equipment and other production support. The government also plans to establish strategic coffee processing facilities in key producing regions, including Eldoret, Kakamega and the Mount Kenya area, while expanding access to processing equipment to reduce production costs and increase value addition. The production drive follows another milestone for Kenya's coffee industry after the country exported its first shipment of coffee directly to Italy without using traditional green bean traders or the Nairobi Coffee Exchange auction system. The inaugural shipment of 20 containers, exported by SumSeron Coffee through the Port of Trieste, is expected to provide Kenyan producers with greater access to European buyers and improve returns for farmers. According to the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the coffee sold for more than US$9.50 per kilogram, with the Italian market viewed as a strategic gateway to the wider European Union. The government also plans to increase domestic coffee consumption from 2% of annual production to 20% over the next five years through continued fertilizer subsidies, wider seedling distribution and measures designed to increase farmers' incomes.
