​​🧐 How Education Changes the Course of History What Aristotle placed in Alexander the Great before he began to change the map of the world. I have been thinking about the role of personality in history and about how one person can influence the fate of millions. I remembered Alexander the Great. Did you know that his teacher was Aristotle? Alexander’s father invited Aristotle because he wanted not only to give his son knowledge, but also to shape his character. Aristotle educated the young prince from the age of 13 to 16. In antiquity it was believed that a person becomes the stories he carries within himself. That is why young men were raised on epic poetry and tragedies, and through philosophical conversations their inner image of a person was formed. ✍ This is where the most interesting part begins. Aristotle taught Alexander in part through the epic Iliad. They spoke about anger and honor, about fate and responsibility, and about the relationships between a ruler and his warriors. This poem shaped Alexander’s strategic thinking and the psychology of the hero. He called the Iliad the treasure of military art, always carried it with him, and kept it under his pillow next to his dagger. According to ancient authors, this was a special copy of the poem prepared for him by Aristotle. The main hero of the poem is Achilles, and for Alexander he was an example of personal courage and a life devoted to a great purpose. Aristotle taught Alexander from about the age of 13 to 16. The program of study included philosophy, literature, politics, medicine, and the natural sciences. It is interesting that already at the age of 16 Alexander began to take part in governing the state. At that age he suppressed a rebellion and founded his first city, Alexandropolis. At 18 he was already commanding cavalry and played a key role in a major victory of the Macedonian army. At 20 he became king of Macedon, suppressed uprisings, and consolidated his power. At 22 he began his campaign against the Persian Empire. Within the next few years he completely defeated it. By the age of 30 Alexander had founded around twenty cities that became centers of Greek culture and science. During this time he also carried out a campaign into India. At 32 Alexander died in Babylon, and the exact cause of his death is still unknown. In his short life he managed to create one of the largest empires of the ancient world, spread Greek culture from the Mediterranean to India, and effectively change the political map of the world. One more detail that surprised me. Alexander did not simply command his army. He almost always went first into battle and personally led the attacks. He lived alongside his soldiers, ate the same food, and slept in the same conditions. There is a well known episode when during a difficult march he was brought a small amount of water, but he refused to drink because there was not enough for everyone. He knew many of his soldiers by name, spoke with them, took interest in their lives, and personally rewarded them for bravery. Even during military campaigns he continued to read and discuss philosophy. He corresponded with his teacher Aristotle and always kept the Iliad with him. ​​🍹 Five Signs That the Tourist Season Is Beginning in Crete In March, the smells of spring return, the sound of cars grows louder, different languages appear in the streets, and there is a feeling that the island is starting to move faster again. The transformation happens almost overnight. Here are five very clear signs: 1️⃣ More cars on the roads. Not tourist cars, but local ones. Locals begin driving into the “tourist areas,” preparing shops, hotels, and tavernas for the coming season. 2️⃣ The second sign is language. In winter you hear almost nothing but Greek. Now English and other languages begin to appear. You can notice it especially at store checkouts. In summer, however, it is the opposite — you mostly hear foreign languages, because locals are busy working from morning until night. 3️⃣ The third sign is life returning inside buildings. Shop windows open, shutters are lifted. Inside, everything comes alive again: people are cleaning, washing, repairing, bringing in goods and arranging displays. 4️⃣ Another clear sign is that the nearby apartments begin to fill up. In winter some of them stand empty because seasonal workers leave the island and return home. Now they slowly start coming back. 5️⃣ And a strange but very characteristic sign of the new season — road repairs begin. 🙉 Every year this causes the same confusion and irritation. Why now? Couldn’t they have started earlier? Apparently not… 🌴 Crete lives in two seasons. In fact, living by two seasons is quite an unusual rhythm, and it takes time to get used to it. April–October is the tourist season. People work almost without rest, trying to earn enough to support themselves through the winter. November–March is the winter season. Life slows down. Greek families focus on olive harvesting, construction work, and agricultural tasks on their land. ❤️ And of course, every March brings the same feeling — hope for a good season. Because it is very hard to live without knowing what tomorrow will bring. And right now, many of us understand this feeling very well. But today I answered that for me, Crete is more about survival and inner strength. Now I would speak of Crete not as an ECO-space, but as a viable system. Like a person who has learned to survive — to use resources wisely, build boundaries, and turn opportunities into growth. I would speak not only of the beautiful sea, beaches, and sunsets, but also of limited resources, environmental pressure, and the need for adaptation. In essence, Crete is just a lonely island in the center of the Mediterranean Sea. Yet it is a resilient, independent system that knows how to withstand pressure, preserve its core, and adapt to changing conditions. The nature of Crete knows its own rhythms and laws of form. Crete blooms amidst salt sprays and southern winds. Crete is about light and strength. About beauty that is born from the ability to survive.
