When your dog licks you, it may be gathering information through your scent while also engaging in familiar social behavior. Research from Queen’s University Belfast found that dogs can distinguish the smell of a person experiencing psychological stress from that same person’s relaxed scent, using changes present in breath and sweat. This suggests that dogs can pick up chemical cues linked to our emotional state, helping them interpret how we may be feeling. CurioSpark

A nuclear waste dome in the Pacific is cracking. The Runit Dome, built in the 1970s on a Marshall Islands isle, holds 120,000+ tons of radioactive debris from U.S. tests, including plutonium-239, toxic for 24,000+ years. Spanning 377 feet (115 m), it was never sealed at the base, sitting on porous coral—groundwater flows freely beneath. Rising seas and stronger storms now threaten it. Cracks have appeared; radiation levels in nearby soil and water are elevated. Current leaks are small, but scientists warn of greater risk as oceans rise. Built as a temporary fix, the dome now stands as a warning: the waste inside will outlive civilizations. CurioSpark #NuclearWaste #ClimateThreat #MarshallIslands

The Orleans Parish Communication District in New Orleans has added AI to its 910 emergency dispatch, joining cities like Seattle and Atlanta. The system uses Carbyne’s AI Emergency Call Triage to manage high call volumes. It creates geofences around active incidents, like major crashes, and automatically responds to callers from those areas. If someone reports an event already being handled, the AI provides an update and lets them hang up, freeing human operators for critical calls. Supporters say this reduces strain on understaffed centers. But critics warn of risks in high-stakes emergencies. Emergency calls are often chaotic and hard to understand. Voice AI can misinterpret up to 50% of spoken input, studies show. Cybersecurity experts also highlight vulnerabilities in voice-to-voice AI, including manipulation risks. As cities automate emergency services, reliance on flawed algorithms may delay life-saving responses. CurioSpark

Scott Milinsky, 79, from Pompano Beach, Florida, became the second in his state to receive Kisunla (donanemab), an FDA-approved anti-amyloid therapy by Eli Lilly, after an early Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Over 18 months, he received 18 infusions at Broward Health North. A follow-up PET scan showed all detectable amyloid plaques cleared from his brain. While not a cure—Kisunla doesn’t target tau tangles—removing amyloid plaques can slow cognitive decline, helping patients stay independent longer. Dr. Hazel Wiley, Milinsky’s physician, emphasized this benefit. He’s now among over 60 patients at Broward Health on the treatment. Clinical trials support these results: donanemab significantly reduced amyloid levels, with many reaching amyloid-negative status (Mintun et al., NEJM, 2021). For Milinsky and others, it’s a hopeful step forward in early Alzheimer’s care. #Alzheimers #Donanemab #MedicalBreakthrough CurioSpark

“14 million Americans lost their jobs to AI and automation in 2026.” — Forbes While people lose their paychecks, corporations put AI to work and consolidate control over technology, land, and assets. The new era will divide society into two groups: those replaced by technology and those whose assets grow because of it. I’m Richard Shapiro.
