Yesterday evening, I went to the supermarket. After picking up everything on my shopping list, I was standing in the checkout line waiting to pay. While putting my phone back into my pocket, the ₹500 note I was holding slipped from my hand and fell to the floor. A bald man in a blue shirt, who was paying for his purchases just ahead of me, slowly bent down and picked up the note. I stretched out my hand, ready to thank him and take back my money. But his response completely shocked me! “Anything found lying on the ground belongs to the person who picks it up!” After saying that, he walked away as if nothing had happened. I noticed the people behind me and around me looking at each other in disbelief and whispering among themselves. For a moment, I stood there stunned. I felt angry and upset. I decided I had to do something. Since I didn’t have GPay and had lost my cash, I left my groceries behind and ran after him into the parking lot. Curious to see what would happen next, several people from the queue followed me. I asked him to return my money, but he ignored me completely and continued walking with a smug expression. He reached his car. To take out his car keys, he placed the two shopping bags he was carrying on the ground. I thought to myself: This is my chance! I grabbed both bags and repeated the exact same words he had said to me: “Anything lying on the ground belongs to the person who finds it!” Then, with a mix of fear, excitement, and laughter, I ran off. The people standing nearby applauded and cheered me on. That “clever” man became so furious that he drove off after nearly knocking over several security cones in the parking lot. After the adrenaline rush wore off, I got home and laughed about the whole thing. When I opened the bags, they contained: * 1 kg prawns * 2 packs of yogurt * 2 kg basmati rice * Whole grain bread * 500 g cashew nuts * 2 jars of strawberry jam * 1 kg raisins * 1 jar mayonnaise * 500 g milk powder * 4 clock batteries * 500 g Milma ghee * 1 packet chicken masala I have never bought so many groceries in my life for just ₹ 500! As I write this, I’m munching on those cashew nuts and wondering…..Was what I did right, or was I simply being vindictive? Have you read this far? The truth is, none of this actually happened!
