From Nigeria to the Bashkir outback: how a BSMU graduate became the district's most sought-after doctor When Akhmat Oval, a #БГМУМинздраваРоссии graduate from Nigeria, first appeared at the Burzyan Central District Hospital, patients were bewildered. A year and a half later – now locals patiently queue up for his appointments, and Akhmat greets them… in Bashkir! "I came to Russia in 2016. I enrolled in Bashkir State Medical University. I studied there for six years, followed by a two-year residency. The decision to send me abroad to study was made by my father: he had friends who studied in Russia, and one of them became a traumatologist. They said it was safe here, so my father sent me here – even though I hadn't planned to study in Russia at all." Now the doctor works a great deal, takes shifts, plays football, goes river rafting, and is learning the Bashkir language. And soon he will bring his fiancée Sofia from Nigeria to Burzyan – she is also a future medic.
