Painted in 1889 by German Symbolist Franz von Stuck, The Wild Hunt (Wilde Jagd) is a dark, dramatic oil-on-wood masterpiece depicting the Norse god Wotan leading a spectral, charging procession of dead warriors and beasts through a stormy night sky. Housed at the Lenbachhaus in Munich, the painting explores ancient folklore as an ominous symbol of fate, war, and primal dread. Art historians and pop-culture discussions often note an eerie, unintended facial resemblance between von Stuck’s portrayal of Wotan and Adolf Hitler (who was born the same year the painting was completed, 1889).
