With roots tracing back more than 600 years, and believed by many to be as old as 2,000 to 3,000 years, Irreecha reflects the Oromo people's deep spiritual and seasonal tradition of thanking Waaqa (God) for peace, life, and the transition from the rainy season, Ganna, to the bright season, Birraa. In modern times, since the early 1990s, Irreecha has grown into a large pan-Oromo and national cultural celebration, officially recognized by the Ethiopian government as one of the country’s major cultural festivals. Today, as we celebrate at Hora Harsadii, we also remember those who lost their lives during the 2016 Irreecha gathering, honoring their memory with prayers for peace and unity.
